SAMPLE CHAPTER:

How is it possible for a body to ache so much from exhaustion? My eyes felt like they were weighed down by rocks when I finally left the work that evening.

As I usually did on the drives home, I found myself thinking about my dad. He was passionate about his job as a gardener, which was awesome, but he was also known for ignoring his doctor's advice to take it easy, and that worried me—like, a lot.

The sweltering summer air made beads of sweat form on my forehead. With my AC broken, I rolled down the windows. Thankfully, there was minimal traffic, so I was able to reach the Radcliff estate without getting stuck in a never-ending jam.

As per my routine, I parked outside the main gate and honked three times, the signal for my dad to come out so I could drive him to the pharmacy to pick up his "secret" pills.

Five minutes passed, then ten . . . I wanted to honk again, but I knew how much Lucy Radcliff despised it when I did that, and I didn't want to land my dad in hot water with that wicked woman. She embodied every stereotype you could have about wealthy, bitchy, stuck-up people.

"Come on, Dad . . ." I inched the car closer to the golden gate, hoping he'd spot me, the engine sputtering as always. I didn't mean to block the path, but when things were supposed to go smoothly in my life, they never did. The car suddenly stalled and died on me. Frantically, I turned the key, but nothing happened. The engine was as quiet as the night itself.

I got out to look for my dad, hoping he could pop the hood and breathe life back into that old heap.

"Dad!" I yelled towards the garden. Nothing. "He's probably in the back," I mumbled. I walked up to the camera doorbell and pressed the button. No one answered, so I hit it again. BEEP BEEP.

"WHY IS NO ONE ANSWERING?" Lucy Radcliff's voice blasted through the speaker below the camera in her high-pitched voice. I leaned in closer to the lens.

"Mrs. Radcliff. Sorry to bother you. It's Ava. Is my—"

"Ava who? If you're here for my son, I suggest you turn around and spare yourself the heartache."

My mouth gaped open, but I couldn't find the words. My dad had worked for the Radcliffs all his life. I practically grew up on this estate. I lost count of how many times Mrs. Radcliff had scolded me over one trivial thing or another. How on earth could this woman not know who I was?

Fucking how?!

In complete shock, I was about to explain that I was here for my dad when Lucy Radcliff had already hung up. "Unbelievable . . ." I mumbled, shaking my head in disbelief. I wasn't one to judge, but I seriously couldn't stand the Radcliffs. Not Lucy Radcliff, and definitely not the joke she called her son. The grandpa, Elijah, was cool. But that was about it.

Well, if Lucy Radcliff thought she could treat me like trash and make me wait here for hours, she had another thing coming.

I stormed over to the gate and grabbed it high above my head with both hands. Fueled by irritation, I placed my foot onto one of the horizontal metal bars and hoisted myself up. It didn't take me long to climb to the top, practically dangling over the edge, when suddenly, the darn gate began to open.

"Ah!" I shrieked and tightened my grip to avoid falling.

The gate slowly opened wider, pushing me into the branches of an oak tree next to the brick wall. I didn't even get the chance to see the shiny Porsche pull up. All I heard was the all-too-familiar voice of the guy I despised with every fiber of my being.

"Whose car is blocking my driveway?" Benjamin freaking Radcliff yelled as he brought his fancy Porsche to a stop. A loud honk from his car horn cut through the summer air, startling me to the point that I nearly fell off the gate.

"I'M COMING!" I snapped from inside the tree. I tried to climb down, but a branch got caught in my hair.
