“Sit tight,we’ll be at the hanger soon.” His gruff voice permeates through me and he sounds commanding, cold, and intimidating.

“We’re not goingto the airport?” I bravely ask, still confused about his sudden mood switch. Suddenly, I find myself missing his smile and deep chuckles.

“No,we’ll be taking my jet,” he replies matter of factly and I marvel at how wonderful it must feel to be that rich.

The car startsand we are off in no time, with neither of us speaking a word to each other. The silence feels so strange and awkward, making me so uncomfortable that I spend it staring out the tinted glass until I doze off.

By the timeI open my eyes, we are being driven into a large, open space occupied by the biggest private jet I have ever seen. Before it, stands a man dressed in a pilot’s uniform and two air hostesses.

Rafael rushesto open the door for Chris before doing the same for me. I struggle to keep up with Chris’ long legs as he approaches the three smiling people that will be handling our flight while Rafael follows after us with our suitcases.

“Dr. Young,I’m Devon, I’ll be your pilot for today.”

“Please, call me Chris.”

They shakehands and we are led into the cabin while I gape around in awe at how sleek and modern everything is. My dad may have been a mayor back in our town, but I haven’t laid eyes on this much wealth before.

Chrisand I take our seats opposite each other, fastening our seat belts almost at the same time. He doesn’t look at me now either and his silence is itching at me.

When I open my mouth to try and get a sense of what might be going on with him, I’m interrupted by one of the hostesses who approaches us with a smile.

“Wouldyou like anything to eat or drink sir, ma’am?” She asks, bending a bit low with her hands clasped in front of her.

I openmy mouth to speak but Chris beats me to it. “A glass of wine each, for the lady and I,” he replies without asking what I want or even glancing at me to see if I’m okay with the order. When the hostess leaves, Chris pulls out his laptop and begins to type.

Unable to help myself,I glare at him, annoyed at the way he’s acting all of a sudden.

Then, for the first time since we saw each other this morning, he acknowledges me. “Our flight is stopping at Hawaii, where we’ll meet the crew, then take the boat straight to the Pacific. We have a long journey ahead of us, so don’t hesitate to take a nap if you want.” He says all of that without looking me in the eyes and my fingers squeeze the leather of my chair tightly.

Eventually,I can no longer stop myself from asking. “Did I do something wrong?”

His brows drawtogether and he finally looks at me. “Of course not.”

I expecthim to go further than that but that is all he says. Frustrated, I sigh and sink into my chair.

This is goingto be a long flight.

CHRISTOPHER

Ihave no idea how long I watch Charlotte sleep, but the peaceful look on her unconscious face calms me in a way I don’t expect. For hours, she stared out the window and I could see her eyes light up with excitement whenever she saw something interesting. But, as soon as she turns to share her discovery, her eyes meet mine and immediately deflate.

It’s all my fault,I know. I have barely spoken a word to her since we met today. In fact, I made sure to exude a cold and detached appearance just so I wouldn’t have to hold a conversation with her. It might come across as mean, but it’s the only way for me to stop thinking about Charlotte so much that she affects me.

The night before,I had fallen into a deep sleep and the most amazing thing happened. Rather than being plagued by the demons that usually haunt me in my sleep, my dream was filled with images of Charlotte. She had laughed so musically and had dragged me towards an unknown and eerily beautiful land, but I followed willingly behind her.

I had wokenup from that sleep with even more resolve. My refusal to give her so much power over me that I fall hopelessly in love with her still stands. I have endured too many betrayals to last a lifetime and it’s clear now that Charlotte isn’t just another woman I can have and discard so easily.

She moans lightlyin her sleep and her lips part as she turns her head away from the window. My gaze falls on those lips, wondering what it would feel like to have just one taste. With a sigh, I shake that thought off.

“Sir, would you like anything else?”One of the air hostesses asks, leaning down beside me so low that I can see her cleavage.

If this was another time,I would have led her to the private room on the plane and taken what her lustful eyes were offering me. However, I find myself completely uninterested in her. It seems Charlotte has her claws way deeper in me than I thought, seeing as she’s the only woman I’m interested in.

“Get me another neck pillow,”I tell her, averting my gaze much to her disappointment.

When she leaves, I grab the neck pillow I’d initially requested for before Charlotte fell asleep. I pull it out from behind my neck and unclasp my seat belt. Then, I lean forward and grab Charlotte by the head as gently as possible so I don’t wake her. I place the pillow behind her head, watching as her beautiful, long lashes flutter. Once I’m satisfied with the placement of the pillow, I lean back and clasp my seat belt once again. The air hostess arrives just in time, so I grab the pillow in her hand and dismiss her before placing it behind my neck.
