“Wait. You said that before.”

“I mean it.”

Kresso chuckled. “My family can get its son out of Imko. Himmy looks to be carrying a strong little boy.”

“So, we are waiting for my sense of smell to kick in?”

Mahel smiled. “Just for the marking. Your scent is coming in, so it won’t be long.”

“How... what do I smell like?”

“Hral berries.”

She blushed. “Like the one you gave me.”

He nodded. “Yes. They are particularly sweet when warm.”

Kresso offered his hand. “Come on, Yten Lyra. We are going to go exploring.”

“Shouldn’t I put something on?” She looked down at her pearl and rose body.

Mahel spoke from behind her. “Why? There is no one here. Literally. The island is secure and has no occupants. This is the only building on the entire island.”

“So, there are no drones hovering around as soon as I go outside?” She perked up.

Kresso laughed. “No vids.”

She walked with them out onto the huge, covered deck, and the breezes made her hair flicker and flutter. She looked at the hair tie that wrapped from the base of their skull for about six inches, keeping it all tidy. The rest of their hair flowed out of the wrap below their shoulders. She had yet to see a MaKorith male with his hair loose.

She was hesitant but slowly walked out into the light, spied a path, and headed into the woods with the soft sand under her feet. The path led to a meadow and continued to a quiet pool that was pleasantly cool.

There was something freeing about swimming naked, but when she rolled to her back, two interested males crouched at the edge of the pool.

Kresso cocked his head. “You know how to swim.”

“I do. I love swimming.”

He frowned. “You said you drowned.”

“I did. The dam I was working on collapsed, and I was swept off with the rubble. The lake on the other side of the dam took me under, and even though I had jumped clear of the collapse, I was caught by some uprooted trees and held under no matter how much I fought. I saw my last breath floating away from me, and then I dreamed.” She swam toward them. “And then I woke up, and a few hours later, I was introduced to your brother, and his scent was close, but it was wrong.”

She pushed herself out of the water until her face was in front of his. “Your scent is much better.”

He leaned forward and pressed his lips to her neck. “And yours is coming in fast.”

She shivered and crossed her legs at her ankles.

“How did you choose if you can’t determine scent?” Mahel asked from where he watched her.

“Oh, I can determine it. I can catch it. I know what I like, but it doesn’t get to the point of me being insensible or out of my mind when the heat rises. It is like reading about a scent. It is identified, but it is grey and unremarkable. I know it can be so much more.”

Mahel blinked. “You chose candidates based on that unremarkable translation.”

“Yeah. Don’t get me wrong. I still got hot, but again, it could have been more, and I know it, so we wait.” She flexed her legs. “So, what the hell happened to you guys this morning? Claws, teeth, the extra necks.” She raised her brows at Mahel. Kresso was still busy licking at her neck where her largest scent gland was.

Mahel grinned. “I guess you haven’t seen an alpha ready to throw themselves into a rutting situation.”

“Aw, sorry to disappoint.” She smiled.
