“Marking? Mating?”

Himyana’s eyes widened. “Oh. Right. You might not have that. I will explain.”

“Lyra has suggested that we make all educational and historical materials available, as we would to a child.”

A knock on the door preceded the entry of three alphas with tablets and scowls. They froze in place when they saw Lyra.

“Mr. President, is that...” a heavily muscled blonde asked.

Lyra walked up to the men, put her hand on her hips, looked up at them, and said, “Boo!”

Himyana laughed and quickly put her arm around Lyra, ushering her out of the room and down the hall. “That was really dangerous, Yten Lyra.”

“Just Lyra, Lady.”

“Himmy. Call me Himmy.”

“Himmy, why are you rushing me out of the room and down this hallway?”

“Because those three were unattached alphas, and they might not be content with a light touch or a hug. They aren’t the ones that Imko wants for you.”

“So, he is using me for political gain?”

“Absolutely. You are being used to cement a team, and if any of the others wake, they are going to be used the same way.”

Lyra sighed as she was pushed along by the very sprightly pregnant lady. They turned into a room that looked like a fancy living space, and Himmy closed the door behind them.

“I am going to order some refreshments. When did you last eat?”

Lyra looked around the room decorated with a lot of weaponry on the walls. “Um, I don’t know. They haven’t fed me yet, so I don’t know what I like.”

“Oh, this is going to be fun. I am going to order some of everything.”

Lyra looked at her, and the woman had her fingers pressed to her ear, and she was talking rapidly using terms that seemed food related. When Himmy finished, she smiled happily. “I have been hoping for an excuse to do that. Imko has been watching my intake carefully in the hope that I won’t get much bigger. My belly is his favourite feature, but it’s freaking him out a bit.”

“So, is this your first?” Lyra smiled at her.

Himmy paused and said, “It will be our only child. I can’t physically carry a second child from an alpha. That is one of the reasons that we are desperate for omegas. Not every alpha can find a suitable mate, and the random births don’t keep the population stable.”

“Why were the omegas killed?” Lyra asked calmly. “It seems like the thing folks like me should know.”

“Let’s wait for the tea and snacks. This is a long conversation.”

Lyra nodded. “Why all the weapons?”

“Ah, they are mine. A lot of them are captured Su’ath weapons.”

Lyra looked at the woman who bent at the knees to pick up a tablet from a table. “Can I help you?”

Himmy smiled. “If you could help me sit, that would be great.”

Lyra moved over to her side and helped her descend onto the couch. “I even promise to help you up again later.”

Himmy blinked and laughed. “You have been around pregnant women before.”

“I had sisters. Three older sisters. They all had kids. I had twelve nieces and nephews.” Lyra plumped a pillow and tucked it behind Himmy.

Himmy blinked. “That many?”
