“So, what was your first thoughts about board member Prince?”

“It wasn’t my best showing,” Brian confessed.

Jessica choked on air. “What was the point of contention? If you let me know, maybe I can help you out.”

Brian went stock still and then folded his hands in front of his chest. “I’m good. I can figure this one out.”

“It can’t be that the great Brian doesn’t do help from colleagues, does he?”

“It's not that I don't believe that colleagues should help one another, I just don't do that.” Jessica watched him fidget in his chair as if there was a spotlight on him.

“So, when colleagues do it, is it a bad thing?”

“No, it's not bad when colleagues do it. Like I said, I even encourage it on my team.”

“But you don't take your own advice?”

Jessica looked at Brian, who was becoming more and more uncomfortable by the moment. The odd thing was, seeing Brian in this human light made him more attractive.

“So, it's safe to say that you don't ask anyone for help at the office?”

“I don't need to ask for help at the office, I can figure out most problems.”

“You don't think maybe that signals that you may have some trust issues?”

“Trust issues? No, I don't think it means that at all. Whenever something is wrong, I'm the only one who needs to go into the office with my supervisor, not all of us. That's why when a problem comes up, I need to sit down and figure it out. I have to be sure of the answer before I present it.”

“But what if somebody else already knows the answer? Even worse, what if you're wrong?”

Brian stopped and gave her a long look. “Oh, my goodness, you're serious. What if I'm wrong? By the time I hit my boss's office, it's going to be right.”

“Well, I want to say that as part of your 360 growth, I think that you should share the problem that you ran into with board member Prince today.”

“It will be a waste of time.”

“You don't know that.”

“Why go ahead and try it when it has a less than 50% chance of even panning out?”

“Because every now and again, you have to do something that's new, different. If you don't, you're just going to be giving the same old ideas with the same old viewpoints, and you're going to get old and outdated.”

“I get paid for making money and being right.”

“Until the day you're not. All it takes is one person to show you how wrong you are.”

“You see, the thing is that until I met you, though, no one would ever tell me that I was wrong. So, you know what? I was always right.”

“Brian, I'm here.”

“I see you,” Brian grumbled.

“Share, it'll be so good for you. Try it, you might like it.”

Brian held up his hands in the air in surrender. “OK. I'll let you know what the problem was. Not that it's going to make a difference and not that you're going to be able to solve it, but if it's that important to you that I share so that I don't become old and outdated... Let's do this and get it over with.”

Jessica smiled and then sat back as she waited to hear the story.

“Board member Prince said I needed to look beyond the numbers to the people. He asked me about the housekeeping staffing turnover.”
