“Oh no!”

Obviously, Jessica had turned the wrong way because Beth was looking at her.

“Tell me you are not falling for that I’m so chivalrous routine!”

“Beth! He could be genuine.”

“Nope, once a rat always a rat. Did you not see how squeaky took the cheese and is now in the home? Working to help you out, so he says. I bet he's waiting for you to finish all of this work and then swoop down and take all the credit.”

“Beth, you are so suspicious.”

“No, I'm not suspicious. I'm right. That's better than being suspicious.”

“You know it’s possible he’s not like that,” Jessica said.

“Yes, it’s possible. I mean, it's possible to run into a vegetarian rat. It's possible just not probable.”

“Look at them working outside. They are almost done making the cabana. I know that you are suspicious, and I know that you don't trust men for a lot of reasons, but it's possible that Brian is just being nice.”

“So, Jessica, let me tell you. It's possible that Brian is being nice, but I see where this is going. First, it's the I've jumped on your project. Then, it's the slow into your good graces. The next thing you know, he'll be asking you out to dinner. All of this happens while he is secretly going to speak to Pilar and tell her how much work he's doing. CFO is the cherry to his career goals. Just mark my words, he could be nice but… it’s not likely.”

Beth’s words were floating around in her head for the rest of the day. She had the walls and the electricity up in the office when Brian called her.

“Jessica, we’re done.”

She turned and looked at him looking like a construction worker instead of the CFO he could be. Jessica liked there were two sides to him.

“Thank you so much. This office should be done in two days. I want to thank you for helping.”

“It’s no problem, amazing leaders do that,” he said with a smile.

Jessica could hear Beth in the back of her mind, squeak, squeak.

“I was thinking, would you like to come to dinner? Before I left to see Blue I rented a little place. I can cook for you, and we can talk.”

Jessica knew this was the time to say no. In fact, behind Brian Beth stepped out and shook her head no. Jessica found it hard to keep her composure as Beth made all sorts of negative signs behind Brian’s back.

“You know you don’t have to feel obligated to be nice to me?”

“I’m not. I’d just like to have dinner with a smart and beautiful woman.”

Then, both of them jumped as they saw Beth with a broom running across the way yelling, “Those darn rats.”

Jessica smiled and Brian turned to her looking confused.

“Don’t worry about Beth, she’s a little paranoid. I’d be happy to attend.”

“Tomorrow at six? I’ll text the address.”

“That would be great!”

Jessica waited until Brian and the guys left. Beth looked at Jessica with her arms crossed over her chest.

“Okay Beth, say it and get it over with.”

“The only thing I want to say is ‘squeak, squeak’.” Beth turned and walked out of the door. Jessica smiled at her friend. She just hoped this was one of those times that Beth was just being paranoid.
