Brian looked at Jessica and she nodded and kept eating.

“Jessica, it seems very odd that you would be picked as a potential candidate. Some might say there are other reasons…”

Brian saw Jessica turn red.

“Well, if anyone questioned it, it’s because they don’t know she’s a certified genius. Mr. Middleton always spoke of how she was his left and right hand,” Brian chimed in.

“Really?” Jessica said. Brian cleared his throat and Jessica looked at Matheson.

“Ah, well I never wanted to be a brag and Mr. Middleton was good to me,” she said in a demure voice.

“Hmm. I didn’t know that. Brian, what were you before this job that you think would assist you in this position?” Matheson asked.

Brian was shocked. He never in a million years expected to be asked a thing.

“Oh, well, Brian is known for the things he does for his department. I applied to it after I heard he took his team out and they’ve done a charity run every year. It’s so important that a CFO is well rounded,” Jessica said as she slurped her pasta.

Brian looked at Jessica.

“I didn’t know —”

Jessica waved him off. “Everyone knows about the things you do.”

The rest of the night went by quickly. When dinner was over, Matheson made his excuses.

“I want to thank you both. I have rarely been in the company of two people who weren’t at each other’s throat. I think the both of you should still be considered and I’ll be telling Ms. Masters, good night.”

When the door was closed Brian leaned against it.

“My charity works?” Brian asked.

“Yeah, it’s a big deal when you do it every year.”

Brian looked at her with eyes wide before she stopped.

“What? You didn’t want me to show that side of you?”

“I wish it were me. You’re talking about Brian Wykert. He’s my assistant.”

He saw Jessica’s eyes open, and her mouth go round in shock. “I didn’t know. I thought - I’m sorry.”

Brian shook his head and laughed.

“Sorry. I do books and numbers great but people, not so much.”

Brian looked at her oddly.

“Why are you looking at me like that?” Jessica asked.

“Because everyone I know in the agency says they would love to have you for a couple of days.”

“And that is true. They wanted me for a couple of days but no more. After that no one can find things if I stay much longer,” Jessica said in a small voice.

“Why?”

Jessica looked at him and blew out a breath. “Because when I first sort, it’s alphabetical. When I do my second sort it’s by Dewey Decimal System. I prefer it.”

Brian knew his mouth was open, then moments later he just started laughing.
