“It’s not funny,” she warned.

“Actually, it's classic. I wish I had someone who did that.”

“You know the Dewey Decimal System?”

Brian smiled. “My first job in college was in the library, so yes I know it. I had to sort the old volumes and they all had numbers.”

Jessica looked at him and smiled. “Maybe we have something in common after all.”

Brian held out his hand. “Truce?”

Jessica looked at it and then put her hand in his. A moment later he brought her hand to his lips.

“I wanted to tell you that we have a lot in common and that I really like you, Jessica Tingles. You make me —”

Jessica pulled her hand back. “Don’t mess up the moment. It’s time for me to go, but it was real, Brian.”

He held open the door and just as she was about to go out, he called her name.

“Jessica…”

She looked up. “Yes?”

Then he lowered his head. “I didn’t finish. You make me a better person.” Then he placed a soft, quick kiss on her lips. “I can walk you to the Shell...”

Jessica was slowly opening her eyes. “No Brian, I think it’s safer for us both if I walk alone. It’s not far, the men are still in the park and Beth is waiting for me. I mean if you walked me who would walk you back?”

“Safer?”

Jessica reached out and placed a hand on his cheek. “Yeah, because I really like you, too, Brian.” Jessica stepped out of the door and then Brian remembered what he wanted to ask her.

“Jessica, I have a question.”

“Yes, Brian,” she said with laughter in her voice.

“Why is Beth always squeaking?”

Jessica just said goodbye and laughed as she walked away.

“Women,” Brian said as he closed the door.

Chapter Thirteen

Jessica finally made it back to the Shell. She was trying to get her thoughts together because she knew she would have to face Beth. What she really needed was something sweet to eat. When she left Brian’s she had sent the code that she was on the way.

When she got to the Shell, Beth was downstairs waiting with donuts and coffee fresh from the coffeemaker.

“Wow, you don’t look like the triumphant woman who left out of here. Tell me what the squeaker did?” Beth asked.

“What did he do?”

“Yeah, what happened? Normally you are bouncing off the walls ready to itemize and tell me all. Now, you are just walking with no aim. It’s like you are in shock. What happened? If you don’t tell me I’ll go over to that little rat’s place and get it out of him.”

“He did nothing wrong,” Jessica sighed and took a bite out of the donut.

“Okay, nothing wrong but you’re down? What was for dinner?” Beth asked.

“Food,” Jessica whispered.
