They made it outside and Brian took her hand and went to sit on the bench in the park.

“Brian, what happens when you find out that I’m just a brain?”

“What are you talking about?”

“I mean a lot of people meet me and they find out that I'm just smart. They know they're going to need me later on, so they keep me around, but they don't really want me. They just want what's in my head,” Jessica said in slurred words as she started to nap on his shoulder.

Brian knew that she was very tired, but the concern was very real. It was that lost tone that made him listen to what she was saying. He knew that it wasn’t true. At least he knew he wasn’t with her for just her brain. It was a great brain, but she was a beautiful person and woman on top of that.

How could she be so smart and not know how giving she was? At the Straw Hat, she knew everyone and made sure not to forget anyone. He would show her how social she was.

“Let’s go, gorgeous. It’s time to get sleeping beauty back to her bed.” Jessica couldn’t stand. Brian picked her up and walked her to the Shell. When he approached he saw the light on and Beth in the doorway. He was still far enough away that Beth couldn’t hear.

“Jessica, we’re just about at your home.”

She rubbed her eyes and looked over her should and then back at Brian.

“You brought me back to my castle,” Jessica smiled.

He framed her face and then leaned his forehead against hers.

“Listen to me, we are going to talk tomorrow. You’re too tired to talk now but tomorrow it’s just us, kid.”

“Tomorrow?”

“Yes, Jessica. Tomorrow we talk and get the elephant out of the room, and work on this doubt that has no place with someone as amazing as you.”

Jessica smiled.

“You think I’m amazing now? It’s so worth it to hear it from your lips once.”

Jessica took a step and stumbled. Brian picked her up and took her to her room. He laid her down in her bed and then nodded to Beth.

“Hey Brian!”

He turned to Beth.

“Yes?”

“You may not be such a bad guy after all. Be careful with her, or you’ll answer to me.”

Brian smiled. “I wouldn’t have it any other way. Let her know I’m coming by tomorrow.”

Chapter Fourteen

“So, are you ready to talk?”

Jessica heard Brian and the short answer was no and never did she want to talk after her ramblings from last night. Jessica sat outside wondering if her breakfast would stay down. Her stomach was twisting and turning in knots.

“If I told you no and never, would you go away?”

Brian laughed. “No, I wouldn't go away because I believe you are totally worth the wait. I’d follow you if you wound up in one of those think tanks for the really smart."

“Ha, what do you know? You’d be there and be surrounded by books and silence. Maybe the occasional treat if you’re lucky but all the rest of the time there is the race to think of something new. Or go to events of people thinking of something new.”

“I could do it for you, now do you want to stop stalling and can we talk?”

“If you want to.”
