“I see that you brought your briefcase, did you want to go over the numbers? I heard that all of the chairmen gave you their portions and —”

“And no,” he said quietly.

“No?” she looked up hopefully. “So, what are we going to do?”

Brian thought about how many people must have overlooked her for her to think that he had taken her to an all-exclusive hotel just to have her work. He wished he could go back in time and shake some sense into all of those people and tell them to look at her and what an amazing person she really was.

“Well, what I think we're going to do is catch a game of golf.”

“Oh, I don't know if that's going to be such a good idea,” Jessica said looking at him furtively.

“Why not?”

“It’s not on any expense reports and —”

“And I make the expense reports…”

“That’s true but remember you are still under scrutiny… You know, trying to make interim CFO.”

“I’m not today.”

“Brian, I don’t think I can play golf.”

“Are you morally opposed?”

“No, I’m ignorant of the rules.”

Brian smiled. “I know there is a beginner group that goes out. We can go with them. It will be fun.”

“I don’t know —”

“You have to try it once since we are here.”

He saw her debate about whether she should go and then after twenty minutes of debating she made a decision.

“Since we’re here, I’ll pay for my own items.”

“I don’t think so, but we can straighten that out later.”

Jessica nibbled her lip for a moment before she turned and smiled at him.

“Let’s go play golf!”

Chapter Fifteen

“Why can’t I just throw the ball?”

Jessica looked at Brian sitting in the golf cart and moaned. “It just seems way easier to toss it.”

Brian wasn’t sure he would ever look at the game of golf the same again. While many meetings had been done on a golf course, Brian had never had to play with a woman like Jessica. First they had to get a golf cart and that took almost twenty minutes. Brian followed her as she went up and down the aisles checking the safety cards on the carts and looking at the wheels.

She was evaluating and looking at color and how worn the seat cushions were since he had told her they would be in the cart for a while. Finally, the rental attendant came to disturb her, and Brian gave him a hundred-dollar bill. “She’s discerning.”

“This one!” Jessica said proudly. She peeked past Brian and saw the retreating back of the attendant.

“Oh, I’m sorry, did I take too took long?” she asked innocently.

“No, you didn't take too long. The attendant came back here to offer a hand, but I assured him we had this.”
