Jessica smiled and Brian realized he would have given the attendant two hundred dollars to keep that smile on Jessica’s face.

Brian picked up two golf bags and put them on the back of the cart. As they were going to the group, he noticed she kept looking at the bags.

“Jessica?”

“Yes?”

“What’s the problem?”

“Nothing, I was just wondering are the bags color coded for beginner, medium and expert?”

Brian smiled. “I don’t think anyone thought of doing it that way.”

Jessica looked at him as if she were about to protest such a thing but then she nodded and looked forward. The group were two other couples. There was an older couple that looked as if they had been married for about forty years and then there was the young couple that looked as if they were a budding power couple.

“Hello everyone,” Jessica waved. The older couple smiled, and the other couple pursed their lips in unison. Brian wondered if they practiced the look of disapproval to sync with one another.

Like a little band the three carts made it to the first stop.

“Jessica, do you know how to play this and what to do here?”

“I didn’t but I read about it on the internet. I think I’ll be decent.”

Brian wanted to smile, and the younger man snorted as he overheard the conversation. Everyone went to hit the ball and managed to get it down the green. Jessica missed twice. Frustrated, she turned to Brian.

“It would be easier to throw this ball.”

Brian got out and stood next to her.

“Do you want some advice?”

She nodded. “Use this club.” Brian gave it to Jessica and on the next swing the ball caught air and went down the lane. Jessica jumped for joy and ran to Brian.

“Okay, I thought this was going to be a dull game but maybe there’s hope,” Jessica said. The older woman came by.

“I’m Myrtle, this is my husband Hank Beason. Don’t worry love, I used to not like golf, either. However, having your husband teach it makes it more enjoyable.” Myrtle looped her arm in Hank’s, and everyone got back into the cart.

“Oh, he’s not —” Jessica started but Myrtle was already out of ear shot. “Brian —”

“We’re socializing, remember? She wanted to talk to you.”

At the green, the Beasons had gone, and the young couple waited for Jessica.

“You need a different club for this one,” the man said snidely.

Brian was going toward him when Jessica stepped in front. “He’s right. He can’t help if his delivery makes him a sour puss. Besides, we’re here for fun, right?”

Brian nodded.

“Good.” Brian watched as Jessica picked up a club that wasn’t meant for what she was about to do. When he cleared his throat she winked at him.

“Oh, we are at a point where I’ve got this.” Jessica tapped the ball, and it went into the hole. The young couple were shocked and the Beasons hugged Jessica. For the rest of the game, it was as if Jessica could do no wrong on the course. What made it even more amazing was she did it with the same club.

At the end of the session the Beasons had congratulated Jessica and told her to look them up any time when they came back. The young couple didn’t even say goodbye. Next, Brian took her to a nearby dessert shop. After they had taken a seat in the booth, she was looking at him from across the way, smiled and broke the silence.

“What?”

“I don’t know, I feel like I was just conned. I thought you didn’t know how to play golf,” Brian said.
