“I want you to see yourself as I see you, Jessica. Don't worry about me being upset, I could never hold onto any of my anger toward you.”

“You are very focused about proving your point, aren't you?”

Brian smiled knowing that this was going to get him in trouble but thinking it was going to be worth it.

“Of course, I'm determined, what else did you expect from the next CFO?”

“Eat up, we all have dreams,” Jessica said with a smile on her face.

Chapter Sixteen

They left the restaurant and found some chess and checkers table in the park. At the end of the game, she saw some cotton candy. She didn’t ask but as soon as Brian saw her looking he said he’d go get it. While they were walking hand in hand, Jessica was thinking about the man who was walking with her. Okay, they were both competing for the same job, but it wasn’t as big of an issue as she thought it would be.

If anything, the problem was Brian was turning out to be her Mr. Right. Jessica thought to herself that sometimes the best option is the last option. As Jessica had her arm looped through Brian’s, her phone rang. When she looked at the number she knew it was from work but didn’t know who.

“It’s the office, but I don’t recognize the number.” She was frustrated but she couldn’t let it go to voicemail. When people called her it was usually their last resort and were desperate.

“They've got to know that you're out of the office,” Brian commented, annoyed.

“I’m the person of last resort.” Jessica had a feeling she should start her new life of concentrating on her now, but guilt beat at her. “Everybody knows where I am at this time of year and what I'm doing. If they're calling me maybe it's a real emergency.”

Brian just looked at her and didn't say anything. Jessica didn't know what was worse, having the call come in or having Brian look at her as if he was waiting for her to make some ultimate decision.

Finally, the phone stopped. She was putting it back into her pocket when it rang again.

“I'm sorry Brian, let me just answer this and then I will meet you at the cotton candy cart.”

“Jessica —”

“Yes?” When Jessica looked up, she could see that it seemed as though Brian wanted to say something, but he couldn't seem to get the words out.

“I'll be quick,” Jessica said, hoping that she could keep to that word.

She watched Brian take a couple of steps away and then she pressed the redial button on her phone. She didn't know what the big deal was. It wasn't like she wasn't already working.

“Miss Tingles?”

“Yes?”

“I'm so glad that you called back. If I hadn't been able to contact you, I don't even know if I would still have a job at the end of this day.”

Jessica closed her eyes and thought it was a smarter thing not to answer the phone. If somebody was worried about losing their job, that meant there must have been a major problem that happened at the company.

“Why don't you tell me what the problem is first and then we can see how we can solve it.”

The woman on the line laughed. “There's no problem to solve, Miss Tingles, you just need to come into the office.”

“I'm sorry, have you looked at the roster? I'm in Peace doing the annual accounting papers.”

“Would you please open up your email?” the women on the other end asked.

“I'm sorry, who is this?”

“I'm sorry I didn't introduce myself. I'm so used to everybody knowing who I am that I sometimes forget, especially when I'm making internal calls. I’m Ms. Cruz. The executive assistant to the VP of Operations, Ms. Prince.”

“The VP of Operations’ EA is calling me?” Jessica looked around until she saw a nearby bench and then took a seat.

“Yes, if you will look at your email, you'll find that I've been sending you emails and also invites so that we can arrange a meeting between you and Ms. Prince. It seems as though she would like you to present the financials to the board.”
