“O-o-kay,” Beth stammered.

Jessica was midway down the stairs when Beth yelled.

“Oh, my goodness, it’s behind you.”

Jessica jumped and turned around. She turned too quickly and lost her balance. Her phone went flying in the air and she fell backward. It wasn’t far but it was still enough to hurt. Jessica fell to the bottom of the stairs and the screen on her phone cracked.

“Oh Jessica, girl, I’m sorry,” Beth said as she ran down to the bottom of the steps where Jessica was trying to get up. Jessica sat up and could feel the pain in her back where the step hit her, but she could still move. It wasn’t until Beth helped her to her feet that she realized she had twisted her ankle.

“You have got to be kidding,” Jessica said aloud.

“Can you put any weight on it?”

Jessica shook her head. “Not for more than three steps. Ugh! Get me my phone so I can call Brian.”

Beth fetched the phone, but she was slow to hand it over.

“Jessica, that phone has seen better days and it doesn’t have a case on it.”

Jessica heard Beth but she was focused on calling Brian. The screen was cracked. Okay, she turned it off and then back on again. The screen flickered up and it went dark. Jessica hit the phone on her leg hoping it would start up.

“Come on, come on.”

“What’s wrong?”

Jessica looked at Beth and wanted to cry.

“My phone is on the glitch.”

“Okay, call Brian from my phone,” Beth offered. Jessica looked at the phone as if it were a foreign object. “Go ahead.”

“I can’t,” Jessica whispered.

“I’m sure he won’t mind that you fell so —”

“I can’t because I don’t know the number.”

“You mean like the number digits?”

“Yes, I didn’t have time to memorize it.” Jessica leaned her head back and tried not to cry like a child.

“Oh Jessica. Well, what’s done is done. Why don’t I go over to his place and—”

“No, he’s in motion already and I don’t want you two to miss each other.”

Beth sighed. “Okay, why don’t I go next door to the restaurant and ask if one of the board members has it?”

Jessica lit up.

“That would be great. You are a lifesaver, Beth.”

“It’s my fault so I don’t mind helping. I’ll be back in ten.”

Jessica was a bit anxious about making breakfast. She had decided to get up early so she still had time and Beth would be back in ten, so all would be well. Then Jessica heard a woman calling out.

“Ms. Jessica?” a woman called.

“Hello, I’m over by the steps,” Jessica called. When the woman rounded the corner, Jessica sighed. She recognized the woman from across the street.
