If ever there was anyone who looked more like a nanny—

Oh god.

The agency.

THE NANNY?

If she was here pretending to be the nanny only because she got here earlier than the actual nanny, then that meant the real nanny was still going to arrive.

And she did arrive.

Why hadn’t Dakota prepared for this scenario?

Fuck. her. luck.

Even when her universe was being moderately kind to her, it came with a damn plot twist she had to untangle.

She couldn’t keep the sweet woman waiting, but she also had no clue what to do.

Okay. She tightened the belt around the robe and told the kids to wait in the living room; she was going to be back shortly.

She ambled to the front door, groaning and shaking her hands as she tried to think of a solution.

She swung the door open. The nanny smiled at her, and Dakota was overcome with the urge to just throw herself in the older woman’s arms and tell her all her problems.

But she couldn't because there were just too many things wrong with life right now.

"Hello there, deary. I’m Aunt Sally from Bees and Buckles Childcare and Nanny Services."

Oh god.

Bees and Buckles was so much better than "The Intergalactic Neon Alliance for Earthly Nannies." She really had to work on her clearly non-existing creativity skills.

"Yes. Aunt Sally. I’m…. I’m so sorry… "

Think. Think. Think.

"I’m so sorry. We meant to call the agency to, umm… postpone the service. Where are my manners? I'm the aunt, the dads' sister, and I'll be here today and possibly tomorrow to care for them. Can you please come back the day after tomorrow around this time? Please. That would be perfect."

"Not a problem at all, sweetie. I'll be here the day after tomorrow at this time. You have a good day now, and please tell your brothers that I look forward to meeting them and the kids soon."

"I will. Thank you so much. See you soon."

She waved Aunt Sally off, shut the door, and leaned against it with her eyes closed.

Her whole life was turning into one big lie.

It's all right, she told herself.

This was it. Once she sorted herself out with the whole diamond saga, she was going to live like a nun. Trouble would not be able to find her if it tried.

She opened her eyes and almost jumped out of her skin as she found Lucas and Charlie looking at her peculiarly.

"Baby Daisy is awake and hungry," Lucas informed her. He then took a hold of her hand and led her back to the living room.

She picked up the sweet little girl whose name she had discovered was Daisy and smiled.

If she managed to get through her time here without spreading her bad luck onto these kids, she’d be a happy person.
