It was only then that she realized the shock, the outrage, and the utter confusion were not coming from her but from Aunt Sally.

Oh, god, help her.

"They are your brothers," she cried, looking at Dakota as if she were the worst person to have ever lived. "I have never in my life..."

"Aunt Sally, no. They’re not my brothers. I don’t even know them. Please, you have to believe me," she pleaded, going after the older woman. "Tell her you’re not my brothers," she turned around and begged them.

"We’re not?"

Argh.

They were not going to help her at all.

"Aunt Sally, please believe me. They’re not my brothers. I made up that story."

"You need to sit down and rethink your life, young lady," Aunt Sally said before she turned around, walked out the front door, and left.

Fuck.

She had a million problems, but right now, she focused only on the three biggest ones.

She marched with intention back to their study.

"Are you freaking happy right now?" she cried, poking her fingers into their chests. "You totally destroyed a perfectly good and wholesome woman’s entire life. That’s what you did. I just wanted her to like me."

She didn’t know why it mattered to her so much that Aunt Sally, a complete stranger she had met for two minutes, did not think the worst of her, but that was never going to happen from the moment she lied about being their sister.

Served her right. But they didn’t have to be so mean about the whole thing. They could have left Aunt Sally out of it.

But, without the adoring nanny, the reality of her situation returned with a hail of daggers, all aimed squarely at her.

"Obviously, I’m not a real nanny."

"Then why are you here?" Preston asked with a calm tone.

"I… I needed a job, and I saw an opportunity." That wasn’t a complete lie. She did need a job—the one she had with Jones— all depended on her getting his diamond back. From them.

"But I’d like to say goodbye to the kids first before I leave. Please," she pleaded. She wrung her hands together. Tears pricked at her eyes.

How had she become so enamored with those kids in such a short period of time? The thought of never seeing them again sliced her in half.

The thought of never seeingthemagain...

She shouldn't be thinking like that about them. But they had kissed her. She had never been kissed like that before. They had taken her virgin lips and changed her forever.

What the fuck?

"Is that all?" Preston asked. "You just needed a job?"

"Yes," she said softly, but part of her wanted to tell him everything as she curled at his feet. The thought came out of nowhere, and she gasped out loud at it. "I’ll get my things and be on my way."

She really did need to have her head examined. When she walked out the door without Jones’ diamond, she had essentially pulled the trigger of the gun he was going to use on her.

Yet that had been the most insignificant part of her thoughts.

"You’re not leaving this house or our sight until we find out the real reason you’re here," Zachary said. There was no chuckle in his voice, no grin on his face. The sternness in his tone rattled her aroused nerves yet again.

She looked at them in panicked horror.
