He kicked open the door to the main bedroom, carried her through and then kicked it closed behind him. “Let me be very clear. Our talk? That’s going to mostly be me telling you how it is and you agreeing to behave yourself and do as you’re told.”

“Oh, that doesn’t sound like me at all.”

“It’s the new you.”

“But I thought you liked me just the way I am?”

Why was it men always wanted to change women? What they found fun and exciting in a casual or new girlfriend, they soon wanted to mold into some boring version of her when things got more serious.

“I like you just the way you are, but you cannot continue living the way you have been.”

“Why not? I’m perfectly happy doing what I do. You can put me down now.”

“I don’t think I will. I find you listen better when my cock is shoved up deep inside you.”

“Fuck you,” she spat at him, really wanting to get down.

“That’s on the agenda, baby. Settle down.”

“No.”

“What is wrong with you?”

“Not one damn thing. I thought we were getting along…”

“We are,” he said, his voice filled with exasperation as he set her down on her feet.

She spun out of his arms and glared at him. She knew her eyes had to be flashing. Poppi had always said she was typical ‘black Irish’ in both looks and temper. Was she always to be a disappointment to the men in her life—not thin enough, not rich enough, not pliable enough?

“Not really. We fuck a couple of times and suddenly you go all caveman—me Tarzan, you Jane.”

“Tarzan wasn’t a caveman. Did you miss the part where somebody sent a hit squad after you? Do you understand you and Mia would have been killed?”

“Me? What about you? I’m sure a man in your position makes lots of enemies. And what makes you so damn sure they didn’t follow you? We were in the house; we had homemade pizza and were going to watch a couple of movies, and then you and Hawkman barge in…”

“Hawkman?”

“Yeah. You know, Carter Hall? Hawkman fromDC Comics Legends of Tomorrow?”

“What the fuck are you talking about?” he asked, confusion written all over his face.

“Your tech guy is named after a superhero.”

“He is?”

She shook her head. “I don’t want to fight with you, and I’m not changing anything about me for you. If you don’t want to fuck me, just say so. I’ll either find someone who does or do without, although I was really looking forward to another go round with your dick.”

His eyes flashed with anger and his skin took on a ruddy hue. “So, any dick in a storm will do?”

Claire straightened her spine. “You don’t get to be jealous. And yeah, any dick that doesn’t want me to give up what my whole life has been about. Know anyone?”

“Your whole life hasn’t been about you being a jewel thief.”

“Yes, it has. Every single fucking thing I’ve ever done in my life has been geared to one goal and one goal only—to right the wrongs made not only by the Nazis but by a group of unscrupulous men who decided it was better to steal from those they didn’t think could do anything about it.”

“There are legal ways to do these things.”

“Are you so fucking naive that you truly believe that? My grandfather did that—tried going up the chain of command. Sir Godfrey’s father and his cronies got him cashiered. It changed the entire trajectory of his life. He went to prison.”
