“Lane, it’s not that big of—”

“Text me the next time he comes in, Lanie.”

The tone in his voice, so low and tight, sends shivers racing down my spine. I’m half-afraid to do as he asks for fear of what he’ll do to the guy if I do send him a text.

“I’m sure he won’t come back, Lane.”

“If he does though—”

“I will. I’ll let you know,” I say, just to end this conversation. “I promise.”

He looks at me closely for a moment then nods. “Good girl,” he says and tosses me the keys. “You drive.”

“What? I can’t drive,” I exclaim.

“Sure you can.”

“I haven’t driven on streets before, Lane.”

“Not much traffic out. It’ll be fine.”

“Lane.”

“If you don’t drive, we’re going to have to walk. Your choice.”

Without waiting for me to respond, Lane climbs into the passenger seat and closes the door. My heart is thundering in my chest, but with a sigh, I walk around the car and get in behind the wheel then start it up.

“Remember,” he says. “Just relax. You got this.”

“I got this,” I say then pull away from the curb.

We make the drive home in silence—mostly because I’m so freaking nervous that I’m afraid of the distraction a conversation might be. We pull into the marked spot in the underground garage, and I turn off the engine, my hands still trembling on the wheel, and I let out a long, shaky breath. Lane turns to me with a smile on his face.

“See? I told you that you had it,” he says. “Easy, peasy.”

“I don’t know about that. I’m still shaking,” I tell him. “I think it’s going to take a while for this whole adrenaline rush to dissipate.”

“You did good, kid.”

“Thanks, Lane. But next time, give me a little warning that you’re going to make me drive first. I just need a few minutes to mentally prepare.”

He laughs. “You coming over tonight or going home?”

"I'd like to come over tonight if it's not an imposition."

“It’s not. Not ever,” he says.

Daisy greets us at the door with her tail wagging and her enormous body wiggling.

“Somebody’s glad to see you,” Lane says.

“Ugh. I don’t know how. I stink,” I reply. “Mind if I grab a shower?”

“Like I said, mi casa es su casa.”

“Gracias,” I say and hesitate before standing up on my tiptoes to give him a quick peck.

Lane offers me a smile as I head to the guest room and close the door behind me, then strip down and turn on the shower. I turn my face up into the water and luxuriate in it for a few moments.
