I’d noticed her blatant infatuation with him. She stared after him wherever he went. She constantly licking her lips as she ogled at his sumptuous backside or his well-endowed crotch. Yes, I'd looked too but never made it blatantly obvious. Then there was the matter of how her clothing had gotten tighter, shorter, and sexier, but still barely fit within the parameters of our dress code. Her makeup, once light and casual, had been done with the greatest precision to highlight her best features. To make matters worse, every time I looked up, she was either giggling at something Travis had said or was touching his arm. Travis, however, seemed completely oblivious. It was like he had no idea she was interested in him. Just like he was tonight.

Glen had just announced he was going home to spend time with his family before he packed up his things and he left. Putting all my papers, notepads, pens, and folders back in order, I decided that I would leave too, but needed to make a pitstop first. My bladder was on the verge of bursting and I could no longer deny the call of nature. Stating that I'd be right back, I shuffled off to the restroom where I did my business. Five minutes later, I returned, bladder empty and tired from a long day. I’d just reached the door when Leah’s hyena-like giggle sucker-punched the air.

“You know, Travis,” Leah cooed seductively just before she added that she wanted him to fuck her right there on the conference table. And that wasafterhe ate her out. I gagged. I mean the nerve! Right where we'd all eaten our dinner not more than an hour ago. I tried not to gag again as Leah confessed that she’d been dying for him to sink his long, hard cock into her pussy, and that she just knew they’d be explosive together. The desperate bitch even offered to blow him under the table first, if that’s what he wanted. Acid burned my throat as I listened to how she’d fantasized about sucking him off during our meetings and how wet she was just thinking about it.

“Just thinking about it makes me want to finger myself. My pussy isso wetfor you, Travis. It’s so hungry for you, it’s literally dripping.”

A wave of revulsion rose up the back of my throat as I pictured her dropping to her knees and undoing his pants. That wave burned further when Travis cleared his throat, interrupting Leah as she continued to describe her fantasy in perfect detail.

“Leah,” his deep voice rumbled. I closed my eyes, certain that he was about to accept her offer. I don’t know why it bothered me so, but it did. Ihatedhearing her come on to him. I was sure he was going to take her bait, but surprisingly, that's not what happened.

“Yes, you sexy beast? Do you want me as bad as I want you?” Hopeful. The bitch’s voice was hopeful and knowing. Suddenly, my eyes were hot and I felt like I was on the verge of crying.

“No, I don’t want you.” Travis heaved out an exasperated sigh. “In fact, I want you to stop this. Not only is this . . . propositioning me uncalled for, but you are making me uncomfortable and putting me in a position that I shouldn’t be in. So I’m going to ask that you step back and keep your distance.”

What? That wasdefinitelynot what I expected to hear. Swiping my hand over my eyes, I shrunk back against the wall and continued my eavesdropping.

“Aww, baby,” Leah cooed again. “I know you don’t mean that. You don’t have to play hard to get. When it comes to you, I’m a sure thing.”

“Well, I’m not!” Travis roared as he lost his cool. “I’m not a sure thing and I don’t appreciate you coming on to me!”

I giggled into my hand, earlier sorrows forgotten and delighted because that was not how I expected him to react. In fact, I was more than a little proud that Travis didn’t take the douchebag route. Instead, he took the gentleman’s highway straight to Integrity Town.

“It would do you good to conduct yourself with some decorum,” Travis barked angrier than I’d ever heard him before. “Saying that . . . stuff . . . to a colleague, especially one in a position of authority over you, is beneath us both. I don’t know why you thought it was okay to proposition me, but it is not. That’s not how you gain respect or get ahead. If you knew what was good for you, you’d act more like Dee.”

“Why would I want to act like that frigid bitch? I mean, there’s got to be a reason why her ex-boyfriend dumped her. She’s always strutting around like she’s better than everyone. Don’t you find it sickening the way Russ is always kissing her ass? I wouldn’t doubt that there’s something going on between them.”

The fucking nerve!

My best friend’s dad? Gross!

My hands fisted at my sides and it was all I could do to keep myself from storming in there and punching her in her obnoxious mouth.

“First of all, don’t youeverdisrespect Dee or Russ like that ever again! Do you hear me?"

"Andwhyshould I care?"

"Because you won’t like the consequences if you do. Second, if you had any ounce of sense in that brain of yours, you’d focus on your career and not getting into my pants. And just so that we're clear, that’snevergoing to happen.”

“What if that's what I want? What if I don’t want to be at the top of my career? What if I’d rather be on top of my future husband and never have to worry about anything ever again?”

Goddamnit, Travis and I were both right. Leahwasa trashy little gold-digger and she’d just admitted that she didn’t give a shit about all the work she’d put towards getting her degrees and her license to practice law. By her own admission, all she cared about was landing a rich husband (in this case, famous too) and having a ball spending the rest of her days hobnobbing at the country club and spending her husband’s money. Just like his ex-wife, or so I heard from Casey.

“Then prepare to be disappointed.” Travis’ tone darkened and the seriousness that dripped from it sent a chill rippling down my spine. “Because you and me? It’s never going to happen. I’ve already dealt with one gold-digger. I’m not about to deal with another.”

“How dare you call me that!” Leah hissed incredulously. “And what do you mean by ‘prepare to be disappointed’?” Her foot stomped the ground.

“It means that I’m going to HR about what happened here tonight. I’m going to report you for trying to proposition me and that you’re wasting the company’s time and money by using the company as a dating service.”

“Go ahead and try. It’s your word against mine. They’ll never believe you,” Leah crowed, thinking she had the upperhand. Apparently, she’d forgotten a crucial part of this business. Leah forgot that Russell Harrington’s primary work philosophy was CYA. Cover. Your. Ass. And cover our asses he did.

“You seem to have forgotten that every conference room is monitored visually and is equipped for sound recording. Everything you did tonight has been recorded and when I go to HR to file a complaint against you, all they have to do is notify the off-site monitoring company that they want the footage. I’m pretty sure the company will be all-too happy to give them what they need. After all, that’s what they’re paid for.”

“You know, I thought you were a cool guy,” Leah snapped viciously. Apparently, she didn’t appreciate him rebuffing her advances, nor did she like him chastising her for them. “I thought because you used to play professional football and hung out with celebrities, that you’d be down for a good time, and maybe open to seeing where this could go. I know how all you ballers roll.”

“Assuming you knew me was your first mistake.” Travis’s deep, almost hostile baritone boomed out into the hallway. “Just because I played football, doesn’t mean I was your typical baller. It was quite the opposite, actually. You see, I wasn’t the type to sleep with hordes of jersey chasers, or spend every waking moment blind, stinking drunk. I never hung out with celebrities. Hell, I barely hung out with anyone because if I wasn’t at practice, I was studying for my Juris Doctorate. I didn’t have time to ‘be the typical baller’. I had responsibilities, a family, and I made sure theyalwayscame first.” Yet hedidmarry a jersey chaser. One I hoped he’d never repeat. Both for his sake and his little girl’s.

“Your second mistake was thinking that I would ever risk my career, and even yours, for some fling that I have absolutely no interest in.”
