I didn’t see Dennis’s fist fly until it connected with my jaw. My head snapped back, throwing my equilibrium off, but I quickly recovered. Red haze clouded my vision as pain radiated up towards my eye socket. Before I could stop myself, I swung back and landed a punch straight to the douchewad’s nose.

“No! Stop fighting!” Dee yelled but I barely heard her over Dennis and him telling me to go fuck myself.

I was on him in a second, ready to beat his ass into oblivion.

“Hey! Cut it out, you two!” Craig's voice soon drowned hers out.

“You don’t fucking deserve her!” Dennis punched me again, in the stomach.

“Oh, yes, I fucking do!” I managed to get a shot to his ribs, making him grunt before he returned the favor.

“Oof!”

“Ah!”

“Hey! Cut it out!”

“Someone get security! These guys are fighting.”

All around us people were shouting but there was only one person I should have paid attention to.

“Oh my god! Travis! No! Stop! Please stop! Please stop fighting!” Dee cried.

“You fucking asshole!” I growled as more punches were thrown. More kicks were landed. Growls. Snarls. Fists connecting with solid flesh. All the ingredients for an epic throwdown fistfight. We continued to wail on each other until several sets of hands pulled us apart.

“You’re the asshole!” Dennis lunged at me, but the two men holding him back had a firm grip. I spat at his feet and was ready to return the sentiment when I noticed something wasn’t right. That someone was missing. Dee was gone.

“Where’s Dee?” I demanded as I searched the area for her but came up empty-handed.

“What?” Dennis shouted, but that didn't matter. What mattered was that Dee wasn’t here. She’d left.

“Where the hell is Dee?” I roared, demanding to know where the hell she’d gone.

“She took off,” Craig rambled out from behind me.

“What?” I glanced back to see he was one of the two guys holding me back so I didn’t tear Dennis’s head off.

“She took off right when you two started fighting. She kept screaming at you to stop, but neither of you were listening.”

Shaking everyone off, I started running. Down the aisle, up the stairs, I ran as fast as I could. I had to find her. I had to make sure she was alright. I needed to explain myself to her. Even if she was pissed off and didn’t want to see me, I needed my eyes on her. I had to know I hadn’t blown any shot I might have had by letting that asshole get the best of me.

I ran through the stadium calling her name and came up empty. Deep in my gut, I worried that she’d left the stadium. I knew she was mad. Mad at Dennis for being a drunken douche, and mad at me for letting him egg me on. But I couldn’t let her being mad stop me from reaching her. I needed to explain that I was only trying to defend her. That I’d defend her with my last breath. I finally found her outside the main gate. Dee paced back and forth, chewing on her thumb as she spat out a string of obscenities.

“Dee!” I shouted as I bolted towards her. Relief flooded my veins seeing she hadn’t left.

“No, Travis!” she warned as her head popped up at the sound of her name. My feet froze in mid-run upon seeing her beautiful blue eyes rimmed in red. She’d been crying. And it was my fault.

“Dee, I’m so sorry,” I apologized as my feet found the power to move again. I quickly closed the distance that separated us. Dee threw her hands up, warning me again to stay back. I did as she asked because I wasn’t the type of man to disrespect a woman’s wishes. I’d never put her in a position where she’d ever be afraid of me.

“Oh, you’re sorry?” Her bitter laugh turned the air even colder. “What are you sorry for, Travis? For letting Dennis get to you? For taking the bait when he said all that shit just to provoke you? Or are you sorry for not listening to me when I screamed for you to stop?” Dee kept pacing. I remained rooted in place, watching her storm with a whirlwind of emotions.

“I’m sorry for all of it,” I heaved out. “I . . . I couldn’t just stand there and let him talk to you like that. He doesn't have the right to hurt you.”

“He was drunk and obviously he’s regretting the decisions he’s made, but that’s all on him.Hemade those decisions.Hechose to upend his life and now he has to live with the consequences. You, however, shouldn’t have lost your temper.”

“I know I shouldn’t have lost my temper, but what else was I supposed to do, Dee?” Frustrated, I threw my hands up in the air. “Was I supposed to just stand there and let him treat you like that? Was I supposed to just keep quiet while he tried to guilt-trip the woman I care about?”

Dee stopped in mid-pace. Those light, denim blues bore into mine. “What did you just say?”
