“I said, was I supposed to just keep my mouth shut while he—”

“No, not that.” She took a step towards me. And then another and another until our bodies almost touched.

“What the hell do you want me to say?” I blew out a harsh breath as I did my best to try to figure this woman out. She was driving me crazy and all I wanted to do was kiss her to the point she forgot that other guy’s name.

“Why did you let Dennis get to you? Why lower yourself to his level?”

“I—I’m not the kind of man that lets a man speak to a woman that way. Especially if that woman is you.”

“I don’t need you to fight my battles for me. I’ve been taking care of myself all my life. I don’t need you or anyone to do it for me.”

“I know you can take care of yourself. That’s one of the many reasons why I like you so much. You’re the strongest person I know, but that doesn’t mean that people can’t help you if they want to!” I shouted. “I can’t help it if that’s all I wanted to do. I just wanted to help you because you didn’t deserve that! You deserve someone to help fight your battles!”

Dee’s chest heaved with heavy breaths. The storm brewing under her surface was magnificent. Hints of its fury flashed like little bolts of lightning in her eyes. Her anger rolled off her, clashing like thunder, violent in its power. I’d never seen her look more beautiful and never had I wanted her more than right now.

“You know what? Fuck it!” I spat as the last bit of my self-control snapped. Grabbing her shoulders, I pulled her into me. My mouth crashed down upon hers, claiming her lips, her tongue, and her breath for mine. Over and over, I kissed those sweet-tasting, soft pillowy lips until my head swam. Dee froze in my arms at first until she started to kiss me back. Passionately, giving me all that fury in one dose. And I drank up every single fucking drop.

“You’re an amazing woman,” I whispered against her mouth as her arms wrapped around my neck and she pressed that delicious body against mine. I groaned, lost in how fucking good she felt against me. "So fucking amazing."

“I know, so shut up and kiss me.” Dee gently slapped my cheek before taking control of the kiss. A soft moan escaped me as we stood there before Chicago, the state of Illinois, and the country, tongues and lips entwined, hands touching, caressing, feeling,as if only we were the only two people who existed.

“What the fuck do you think you’re doing?” Dennis roared angrily. Dee and I jumped apart like two teenagers that had just been caught making out on her parents’ couch. Dennis stormed out of the main gate with Craig, Leon, one of the recent new hires, and a guy from the mailroom, right on his heels.

“That’s none of your business!” Dee snapped as she placed herself between Dennis and I, her back pressed against my chest. Everything in me wanted to pull her behind me and protect her from the dickbag, but then it would be like I learned nothing. My girl could fight her own battles and it was my job to support her. If she wanted to defend me this go around, so be it. “And don’t you dare think about starting anything again, Dennis! You’re drunk. You need to go home and sleep it off. We can talk when you’ve got a clearer head.”

Dennis immediately deflated. All his fight drained out, leaving him exhausted and barely able to stand. Because he’s a solid dude, Craig clapped Dennis on the back and offered to give him a ride. He knew Dennis from before and according to Dee, the two were on friendly terms. I waited as Dennis reluctantly agreed and headed off towards the parking area with Craig. Once he was gone, I turned to Dee ready to pick up where we left off, but she’d stepped back just out of my reach.

“What do you need?” I asked and took another step back, giving her more distance.

“I need to think about this.” She pointed between herself and I. I felt like I’d been kicked in the guts, but I understood where she was coming from. “I know that’s not what you want to hear right now, but my mind is reeling and I need to go home and sit in a hot bath so I can relax and think all this over. I’ve got to . . . process all this first.”

It was definitely not what I wanted to hear, but if Dee needed room to think, that’s what I’d give her. I’d also do it while thinking about her sitting naked in a hot bubble bath.

“Do you want me to drive you home?” I asked because we’d ridden here together in my car.

“If it’s alright with you, I’m going to call Casey and have her come get me.”

“Of course . . . but—” I almost called her baby, but stopped myself in time. “Just do me one favor, please?”

“What?”

“Let me stay here with you until she shows up? And let me know when you get home so I know you’re safe?” Dee blessed me with that vivacious smile that always left me weak in the knees.

“Okay,” she agreed before fishing her phone out of her pocket and making a quick call to her best friend.

An hour later, I was at home, replaying our kiss and dreaming of the day we would take it further. Dee had let me stay with her until Casey pulled up and whisked her away. She’d also sent me a text stating she was home, just like I’d asked. Tonight felt like a big step for us and honestly, I had Dennis to thank for it. If he hadn’t gotten drunk and I hadn’t let him get to me, I might never have had the chance to taste Dee’s sweet lips or show her just exactly how I felt. Even though she needed space and time—and I’d give her all she needed—one thing was for certain, the woman I’d fallen for had feelings for me too. And that was something I coulddefinitelywork with.

“Hekissedme,”Iadmitted to my sister and best friend. We’d gotten together for a girls’ night. With Jason working tonight and my nephew off somewhere with his friends again, we chose Wednesday night as our night to get together. Both Casey and Runa sat with their mouths gaping after I dropped the bomb. The shock quickly turned to intrigue which led to a full-blown interrogation as they leaned forward and ordered me to ‘dish the deets’.

“Dennis kissed you?” Runa asked, confused. Her stinkface was almost laughable.

“No!” I half-shouted, trying to keep my voice down. “Travis kissed me. Dennis was acting like a possessive douche. Dennis showed up with the Boy-Go-Round and got drunk. He tried to pick a fight and naturally, Travis wouldn’t let it go.”

“Really?”Casey burst into a fit of giggles.
