Page 6 of That One Night

“Luke, it’s time,” Ryan shouted out impatiently. “You need to make a decision dude!”

“What?” I paused, yet was unable to look away. “Oh yeah. Gimme a sec.”

But I needed more than a second. I needed to get myself the hell out of this mess before I made the biggest mistake of my life. Okay, it was already too late. I’d let it go too far and now, I was in for a battle. On top of that, I’d spent a fortune on this wedding. I’d footed most of the bill because I had more money than I would ever need and because Vanessa’s new job wasn’t bringing in enough extra capital yet. Up until a minute ago, I’d minded, even though I consented to it. Now, I didn’t give a shit. If I had to spend millions of dollars to find Ariel again, I’d gladly go broke doing it. Lucky for me, it had only cost me a hundred grand. Pennies compared to what being reunited with her again was worth.

“Promise me that we can talk later?” I leaned in and laid my hands on her bare shoulders. A shiver rippled through me. My body buzzed like a Tesla coil. Electricity sparked across my skin. I wanted her. I needed her.

Finally!

Finally, I had her back in my arms. Okay, more like my hands, but I was never letting her go again. Unable to stop myself, my hands roamed across her soft skin. Her smooth, sweet-tasting skin. Skin that I ached to savor with my tongue. I was transported back to that last night in Rome and how I worshipped its silky softness with every part of my body. How her body tightened around me. How she screamed my name as she came in waves so hard that it leftmebreathless. My chest tightened in response and instantly, my cock was a steel pipe.

I watched as her eyes closed. A soft wisp of a moan escaped her lips as I slid my hands up her shoulders and traced the curve of her neck with my thumb.

“Later,” I whispered and it was all I could do to contain myself. Before I knew it, I was leaning in for her lips. The only lips that I would ever kiss again.

The spell was broken as Ryan cleared his throat, warning me of where we were and what I was about to do. Staring deep into her eyes, I reluctantly let her go and turned back to where Ryan and the other groomsmen waited for me.

“Dude! What the fuck were you doing? You looked like you were about to tap a piece of wedding pussy!” Ryan whisper-shouted once I was close enough to hear. His sensitivity from a second ago was long gone.

“Shut the fuck up!” I snapped. “Don’t ever call her that!”

“What the hell? Since when do you care about one of the she hag’s friends? The only reason why they’re here is to keep us entertained so that we don’t ruin her wedding! Vanessa said so herself.”

“That woman is not some man’s entertainment! That’s HER!” I itched to roar, but somehow, I kept myself under control.

Ryan gawked at me, visibly confused for a beat until it hit him.

“Wait, wait, wait!” he said excitedly. “THAT’SHER? The Rome girl?” Ryan was stunned as he pieced it all together. “Do you mean to tell me that that fox over there is your Roman sweetheart?” I barely nodded.

“She is. That’s Ariel. She’s come back to me.” A grin stretched across my mouth. I wanted to dance and shout to the heavens. Somehow, I kept myself reined in. “I’m calling off the wedding, Ry. I’m not marrying anyone but her.”

Ryan exhaled harshly with relief. “Dude. I’m so glad that you came to your senses.” His hand clapped my shoulder as I stole a glance over my shoulder.

I couldn’t help myself. I had to see her again. Turning my head, I looked back just in time to see Ariel’s eyes roll into the back of her head and her knees buckle beneath her. Her obnoxious friend screamed.

I shot across the room and caught Ariel before her head hit the floor. Pulling her into my arms, I held her in my lap as fear froze the blood in my veins.

“Ariella? Ariel, baby?” I said frantically, slapping her cheek to get her to respond to me. “Ariel, wake up, angel. Please! Wake up!”

“Somebody help!” The other bridesmaid, Lou, screamed again.

The sound of running feet vibrated across the floor as I desperately begged Ariel to open her eyes.

“Come on, baby, don’t do this to me. I just got you back. Wake up and open your eyes. I love you, Ariel. Please, just wake up!” Dread sickened my belly again as my pleas went unanswered.

“Everyone please step back. I’m a doctor.” My dad spoke over me. A second later, he dropped to a crouch and glanced at me before turning his attention to the woman in my arms. Placing his fingers on her neck, he checked for a pulse before giving me a nod. “Heartbeat’s steady and she’s breathing,” he announced after what seemed like a millennia. “I think she just fainted, but we should get her to a place where we aren’t surrounded by all these people.” Dad pointed to the room where all the bridesmaids had gotten ready. If I’d known that Ariel had been here the whole time, I would have given Vanessa the finger before ripping the door off the hinges and stealing my Ariel away.

“Lucas, we need to move her, son,” Dad said again with a tap on my shoulder.

Carefully, I tucked Ariel up into my arms and supported her against me as I got to my feet. I followed my dad into the small room where he pointed to a chaise lounge.

“Put her down there,” he said as my younger brother, Michael, rushed in with dad’s medical bag. Mike made a quick exit, leaving Dad to get to work. Doing as he said, I took a seat and laid Ariel out across my lap. “Lucas.” Dad’s deep baritone filled the space as I brushed her beautiful, silky soft hair back from where it clung to her face. “Lucas, son. Has it slipped your mind that you’re getting married today? That Vanessa is moments away from walking down that aisle? The one you’re supposed to be standing at the end of?”

“Vanessa can go to hell. I’m not marrying her, Dad,” I said adamantly, refusing to let Ariel go. The sound of the door slamming shut cut through the air, interrupting us briefly.

“I’ll get some cold towels,” the friend, Lou, declared before setting to work.

“Why not, Lucas? You were so certain this morning when I asked you if this was what you really wanted,” Dad continued, ignoring Lou’s chatter.
