“Oh, that?” He didn’t even bother faking innocence. “Yeah, that was me. I canceled it.”

Chess’s jaw dropped. “You’re not even going to deny it?”

“Look, I have my own problems to deal with right now.” Mark turned his attention to his computer and started frantically typing on the keyboard. “Can we deal with your nonsense later?”

“I’m taking this to Richard,” Chess threatened.

“Okay, good luck with the snitching.” Mark distractedly waved her out of the door. “Close the door on your way out.”

Chess didn’t know what was more annoying; that Mark wasn’t scared enough of her to lie or that he’d shooed her out of his office like a bothersome fly. She had half a mind to head straight to Richard’s office. However, logic told her that since she had no real proof that Mark had actually ruined her booking, it would be her word against his. There was no guarantee that her word would carry more weight than his.

“Just wait,” Chess muttered as she marched past the reception desk. “I’ll get him.”

“Get who?” Donna perked up in her seat.

“Mark.” Chess stopped walking. “He’s the one who canceled Casa de Flores.”

“I think karma already got him for you.” Donna waved Chess over. “Right now he and his team are in hot water.”

Instantly, Chess felt happier. “What happened?”

“You know that movie he’s working on?” In a hushed voice, Donna said, “Two members of the cast were caught messing around with each other in full HD. Their scandal is all over the socials.”

“Oh!” Chess’s happiness deflated like a balloon. “I thought it was something crazy. Cast members mess around all the time. Nothing new there!”

“Yeah, but usually those cast members aren’t the lead characters-” Donna’s lips quirked in a smirk. “And they’re not married to other people.”

Chess’s hands flew to her mouth as she gasped sharply. “Noooo! Billie Hirst and Travis Alexander are having an affair?”

“Yes, girl!” Donna shook her head and clicked her tongue. “Mm mm mm. Can you imagine the PR nightmare that Mark and his team are dealing with?”

Oh, Chess could only imagine.

Laughing, she headed back to her office.Take that, Mark. That’s God punching you for messing with me.

Still, to keep Mark from succeeding the next time he tried to sabotage her, she decided to make sure that the contract with the new venue was signed and stamped as soon as possible. Instead of leaving at five with everyone else, she sat in her office waiting for the new venue to email her a copy of the contract. Once she got it, she called Tazeem.

“Well, well, well.” Tazeem’s smooth, deep voice echoed over the phone. “Who do we have here?”

“It’s Chelsea Winters.” Even though her whole body sighed in delight at the sound of his voice, she kept her tone matter-of-fact as she asked, “Hey, are you still in the office?”

“Yeah.” He asked, “Why do you ask?”

“I need your signature on the venue’s contract,” she explained. “Can I drop by your office?”

He didn’t even hesitate. “Sure, just let me know when you get to the ground floor so I can ask security to let you up.”

“Will do.” She stood with her purse in one hand and the contract in the other hand.

“I can’t wait to see you,” he crooned.

“Ugh!” With a roll of her eyes, she hung up.

AZEEM’S OFFICE WAS JUST AS Chess expected it to be; larger than life, deceptively neat, well designed, and straddling the line between stylish and ostentatious. Just like him.
