“I don’t know. I mean, you probably want someone that understands your high society life. Maybe your mother can find an older woman that is not looking for a husband or a boyfriend. Have you tried an agency?” Aubree knew it would not be ideal for her to be anywhere near Grant for long periods of time. Even now it was difficult for her to continue standing in front of him and not want to kiss and sex him.

“Before you completely say no, here, take this.” Grant handed her his business card. “This has my direct numbers and the salary on the back. Just think about it and give me a call one way or the other. I’m hoping that you will consider taking this job.” His hazel eyes bore into her own like he was trying to find the answer to his proposition. Aubree wanted to scream yes but pressed her lips together to prevent her from saying a word.

As they arrived at the store, Aubree turned to Grant and Chanel smiling at the two. Grant had given her a lot to think about especially with the possibility of earning an additional income.

“Thank you for a wonderful lunch date.. I had a great time with you both.”

“You are welcome very much! Maybe you can join us for dinner tonight, it’s deep dish pizza!” Chanel sang the last syllable of the word pizza trying her best to get Aubree to agree. Even with all the cuteness Chanel had on display there was no way that Aubree could sit through another meal with Grant and not eye fuck him all night. No, she had to pass up this opportunity for her own sanity.

“I’m sorry Chanel, but I promised my best friend I would help with her fall set up. Can I get a raincheck?”

“Oh, man! I guess it will be okay.” With her shoulders slumped down, Chanel walked over to the side to pout.

“I’m sorry. If I could change my plans today for her I would, but I can’t. Nova is determined to get this display done before Monday.” Aubree turned to look at Chanel.

“She will live, but I hope the raincheck is something you will cash in soon. I hope you really think about my offer.” Grant watched Aubree intently. “Come on, baby girl, time to go.” Chanel walked over to Grant, took his hand, and waved goodbye to Aubree.

Aubree watched them walk down the sidewalk to the parking lot. She wondered what would have happened if she said yes to Chanel. Would they have gone to another restaurant for dinner? Or had dinner at their house? Would she be able to control her emotions in a more intimate setting? Aubree knew she would have to turn Grant’s offer down no matter how much money he was offering. With that last thought Aubree entered the boutique to finish assisting Nova and Ivy.

Later that night as Aubree stared at the ceiling fan, she thought about the time she spent with Grant and Chanel and the job opportunity that he was providing. She knew she could use the money, but she wasn’t sure she could be around Grant without sexing him. Grant was the type of man her grandma warned her about since she could remember. The ones that her mother was attracted to and chose over Aubree all the time. The type of man that would ruin her relationship with her father. Even though Grant didn’t seem like the wealthy men she was warned about, she would have to be careful.

Just as Aubree rolled over to turn her lamp off, she heard the message notification chime from her phone. The screen illuminated with a text message from an unknown number. Aubree opened the text

Unknown: Hi, this is Grant. Chanel wanted me to tell you she had a great time with you today and wanted to know when we can do lunch again? Or dinner?

How did you get my number? The man had to have investigators working for him to have her number.

Grant: I got your number from the dance parent book. I hope you don’t mind.

Oh, okay. Well tell Chanel I enjoyed her company today too, and we must do lunch again soon.Aubree smiled as she typed the message.

Grant: I will let her know. Have you thought any more about the job offer? I just want to know if I need to start working with an agency to look for another nanny.

I’m not sure if this will be a good idea. All you want from me is to be a nanny for Chanel. She had to know the answer to this question because Aubree didn’t believe she could be around Grant and not want more from him. She watched the three dots bounce up and down waiting for Grant’s response. The dots stopped, and nothing was said. Aubree thought she had crossed the line to assume he wanted more than a nanny for Chanel. Turning over, Aubree turned off the lamp and prepared for bed. As soon as her eyes closed Aubree heard her phone ping with a message. Grabbing her phone off the night stand, she opened the message app.

Grant: All I want is a nanny for Chanel.

Grant: For now….

Chapter 14

Aubree walked out of her grandmother’s house ready to start the weekend with Nova and Ivy. She had taken the temporary nanny position against her better judgement and her grandmother’s words of warning.

“This is history repeating itself. Do you really believe that man will have you in his house and not use you for his humping post? Why can’t you just find another part time job that is safe and free from wealth hound dogs? All wealthy men are the same; when they get what they want, they will leave you.”

“It is just temporary until Grant finds another nanny.”

“Nothing will be temporary. You are going to fall just like your momma. Back at home heartbroken because you think that man is going to be different than the one you had before.”

Grandma Margrett walked away after speaking her peace. Aubree knew it wasn’t the end of this conversation until she stopped working for Grant. Her grandmother didn’t understand what she was trying to accomplish with her dream of owning her performing arts center. The one thing that had been in her reach, but she hadn’t been able to grab hold to it. She was nothing like her mother and would never be like her mother. She wasn’t working for Grant just to get close to his wealth; she was there because of Chanel. Life had taught her a valuable lesson about depending on men to do anything beyond want they wanted to do for you. Gerald had taught her well and her daddy too. Aubree reminded herself daily that this position was temporary until Grant found professional help.

Nova and Ivy thought working for Grant was the best idea and encouraged her to take the job especially after Aubree mentioned how much the weekly salary would be. They also thought that this job could turn into a great love story for Aubree, but Aubree wasn’t looking for love--she just wanted to save enough money to secure a space for her dream. Love was too high of a price to continue paying at the cost of her dream being deferred. Love always seemed one sided for her and no one else was sacrificing in the relationships but her. Sacrificing her time, money, family, and dignity. Love would have to wait until Aubree’s dreams became reality for all to see.

Aubree had just pulled into the parking lot of NOLA Soul to join Nova and Ivy for the After 5 Soul Hour for drinks. As soon as Aubree walked through the door, she saw Ivy waving her over to their table. The place was already filling up with the young working professionals escaping the work week with signature drinks and delicious cuisine. Before Aubree could get settled at the table and give her drink order, Ivy started with the questions.

“Have you fucked him yet?”

“Well damn, hello to you too. How was your day? Did you see he who should not be named today and fuck him?” Aubree glared at Ivy. They knew not to say the name of the man Ivy claimed to despise, but Aubree knew differently.
