“How are you feeling about that?”

“Less irritated than I was yesterday.”

“What about the war god? How are you feeling about working with him?”

“The same as I do about Shere.”

“Glad to hear it. Is there anything I can do to help?”

“I don’t believe so. Two more agents arrived a few minutes ago. Zeppelin and Magnum. I should greet them.”

“Henry ‘Zeppelin’ Bonham and Justin ‘Magnet’ Magnussen.”

“Right. Sorry.”

“Don’t be. Both did damn good work with the US National Reconnaissance Office. They assisted Ares on the big trafficking bust a couple of years ago.”

“I thought they were with MI6.”

“They are.”

“Which task force are they with? The US or UK?”

“I’m not sure.”

“Wait. Did you just say you’re not sure?”

“Hush up, you,” she said, laughing. “I’m tellin’ you I’m not the spy I used to be. In fact, I never was the spy everyone thought I was. No one could’ve lived up to that hype.”

“That’s rubbish, and you know it. If anything, you far exceeded the hype.”

“We’ll see.”

“Wait. What do you mean?” I asked.

“Wilder and I are taking on some consulting work.”

“You and Wilder, as opposed to just him. I knew there was more to it.”

“Like I said, we’ll see.”

It wasn’t like Wren to be secretive. At least not with me. She’d never divulged anything above my level of security clearance. However, anything that fell within the parameters, she shared freely. Given that was the case, I wouldn’t press her for more information.

“When do you move to Surrey?” she asked.

“I’m not certain, but I should get upstairs. Zeppelin and Magnum may be wrapping up their meeting with Z.”

“Magnet.”

“Right.”

“Not like you to get a code name wrong, Nem.”

“I’m as fallible as anyone else.”

“Actually, you rarely are. It’s why we’re best friends. You make me look good.”

I laughed out loud. “It’s the other way ’round, and you know it.”
