Negative. Still at the hotel.

I watched as she wrote her response and smiled when I read it.Would you like to ride with me or go with Cayman as planned?

With you.

Which hotel?

I responded to her, then messaged Cayman.

I’m about ten minutes from you,he responded.

Change of plans. We’ll meet you there.

Copy that.

Head-straightening would have to wait another day.

After checking out early online,I came downstairs to wait for Nem’s arrival. I glanced over at the bar and, damn, if Iris wasn’t seated there. The only thing that made me feel remotely better about it was she was with a man. The two were close enough that their arms and legs touched. Odd spot for her to meet someone, unless the man was also from out of town and staying at the hotel.

I turned my head in time to see Nem walking in the lobby door.

“Sorry,” I said, rushing over to her.

“No need—wait, is that Iris?”

“Yes, but as you can see, she’s found another man to cozy up to.”

“What do you mean?”

I looked over my shoulder and saw the woman sitting alone. Worse, she saw me and gave a finger wave. “He was there a second ago,” I said without returning the wave.

Nem shrugged, but I sensed she didn’t believe me. “Shall we go or—”

“We should go,” I said before she could suggest something like going over to say hello.

I put my bags in the “boot,” as she called it, and got in the passenger side. “How well do you know Iris?” I asked once we were on the road.

“Is that really what you want to talk about?”

“Um, no?”

She laughed. “Let’s talk about logistics instead.”

“You’re on. Where do you want to start?”

“How many cottages are there?” she asked.

“I don’t know. There are seven bedrooms in the main house.”

“What are you thinking in terms of who stays where?”

Why did the first thing that popped into my mind was Nem and me sharing a bedroom or, better yet, a cottage for just the two of us? I should’ve thought to ask if any of them were single bedroom.

I looked over at her and realized she’d cleared her throat more than once. “Yeah?”

“What are you thinking in terms of who stays where?” she repeated.

“That’s why we’re going to Shere today. To figure that out.”
