When he turned around, I expected him to leave. Instead, he closed the door, then walked over to where I stood. I snapped my mouth closed.

“I don’t want to make excuses—”

“Then don’t.” I folded my arms.

He took another step forward. “Nem, I…I can’t really explain, except to say I’m attracted to you, and I don’t want—”

“Do not say another word. Not a single word. Do you understand me?”

“But—”

“Stop. Talking,”I shouted, grabbing both cases—one in each hand—and pushing past him. I set one down, opened the door, and rolled them through the reception hall and outside.

“Wait,” he said, rushing after me. “We’re both adults here. I was just being honest.”

“And I’mjustreturning to London.”

“What are you going to do?”

“Go home. Work. Sleep—maybe. Forget every word of this conversation. Honestly, forget your every action this afternoon. Then tomorrow, should I decide to return to Shere, you too will have forgotten everything that’s been said.”

“Will you give me a chance to speak?”

“No! I will not give you a bloody chance to speak. What is wrong with you? We’recolleagues. We’re about to undertake the biggest challenge of our careers. Perhaps not yours, but frankly, I don’t care about yours.” I took a deep breath and folded my arms.

“Are you finished?”

“For now.”

“Can I put your suitcases in the trunk?”

“Yes.” I should’ve gotten in the car, but stupidly, I didn’t.

He closed the hatch and stood in front of me. “What I was going to say is I’m attracted to you. It’s as simple as that. However, I have no intention of behaving unprofessionally. Wearecolleagues, and we arebothabout to undertake the biggest challenge of our careers. I will not jeopardize your role in this task force, nor mine.”

“And?”

He grinned. “I’m sorry.”

I shook my head.

“Um, I’m an idiot?”

“Closer. I was thinking more along the lines of a horse’s ass.”

“Speaking of horses…”

“Right. You should go for your ride.”

“I’d enjoy it so much more if you went with me.”

Our eyes met, and as much as I wanted to look away, I couldn’t. “I need to go,” I finally mumbled.

“You don’t sound convinced you do.”

“You were honest, so I will be too.” God, was I really about to tell him this? “I’ve been down this road once before, and it didn’t end well. Actually, it didn’t even begin. What I mean to say is I’ve crossed the line from professional to very muchnotprofessional—”

“With Cayman?”
