“I’ve heard he’s a good man,” she said.

“The best.”

“He’s married to Fatale.”

I smiled and nodded. “Merrigan Shaw-Butler is more my boss than her husband is.”

“She’s a legend at SIS.”

“Have you met her?”

Nem laughed. “I have not. I don’t move in those circles.”

My fingers were close enough that I could tickle her arm, and if I leaned closer, I could kiss her. I did neither. “You do. You just haven’t been in the same place at the same time yet.”

She leaned back, out of my reach. “Is there anything else, or shall we return to the other room?”

“Before we do, I have a question for you.”

“Oh, dear. What?”

“What did Z say to you that made you change your mind so quickly about working here?”

“Bloody hell,” she said under her breath. “Now I wish you would’ve asked me the other one.”

“The other what?”

“Question.”

“I’m lost.”

“If you must know, I got a dressing-down that morning.”

“That was obvious.”

“The worst part was I had to listen to how bloody brilliant you are.”

I laughed. “That must’ve been horrible.”

She frowned. “I was asked to go along with you on working remotely, given it was a small price to pay to have you help with the investigation.”

“I’m sorry.”

“Don’t be. Z was right.”

I shook my head. “I disagree.”

Nem rolled her eyes. “I answered your question. May we move on?”

“No.”

“No?”

“You don’t need me on the Purfleet investigation. You never did.”

“You don’t have to say any of this.”

“I do, because you have no idea how good you are. Neither does Z.”
