“Now you sound like Wren.”

I smiled. “That’s probably the nicest thing you’ve said to me.” I stood and held out my hand. “Come on, let’s go meet with our teams.”

We retraced our earlier walk through the kitchen, where Tank, Blackjack, and Atticus were sitting at the bar.

“Nem, these are the men I suggested you work with on the Purfleet op,” I said over my shoulder.

She stepped around me. “Nice to meet you, gentlemen. Tank, Blackjack, Atticus,” she repeated, pointing to each correctly.

“So, we’re on Team Nemesis?” Tank asked.

I smiled. “Affirmative. In fact, let’s reconvene the group, and we’ll go over assignments.”

“Can you handle it?” Nem asked.

“Uh, sure. Why?”

“Wren and Wilder appear to have left. I’m going to see if I can find them.”

It took me under five minutes to go over the teams. Once I was finished, I returned to the library. I didn’t know whether Nem would too once she’d found Wren, but I had work to do, whether she did or not. I moved her stuff to the side of one of the tables and opened my laptop to check for more information on Yavaros or Altamira. Instead, there was a message from Mayhem, checking in. “Miss profiling?” he asked.

While I’d enjoyed the challenge of it, particularly working with him and Hanadarko, profiling wasn’t where I wanted to focus my attention. Even before the big bust in Texas, I’d worked several human trafficking cases. I couldn’t say I enjoyed it—who would, given the garbage we were attempting to take down? However, it was the field where I could be most useful.

“The boys and I are heading to the pub, if you care to join us,” said Cayman, sticking his head in the door.

“I’m good, thanks.”

“It’ll just be you and Nem here, then. She begged off too.”

“Have fun, kids,” I said, waving. I shook my head and chuckled when I realized how much I sounded like a grandpa.

“What’s funny?” Nem asked, stepping into the room.

“You can leave those,” I said when she rushed over to move her things from the table where I was seated.

“Why were you laughing?”

“When Cayman asked if I wanted to go to the pub, I told him to have fun and called him a kid. It made me feel like an old man.”

She nodded but, clearly, didn’t find the same humor in it I had.

“Did you find Wren?” I asked.

“I did. She and Wilder are on their way to London to have dinner with Z. Apparently, it was prearranged.”

“So, what about you? Are you hungry? We could make something here.”

“Famished. I should warn you, though, I’m a terrible cook. It’s something Wren and I have in common.”

I stood and motioned for her to follow. “Come on, I’ll teach you how.”

She raised her eyebrows. “I’m warning you, when I say terrible, I mean horrific.”

“We need some music to get in the mood,” he said.
