“Perhaps you should return to Whittaker Abbey. You could certainly work remotely from there,” I suggested.
“I said the same thing, but she refused.”
Wren glared at her husband. “Don’t you have a brief to prepare?”
He chuckled and kissed her a second time.
“I’m hungry,” she grumbled when he walked away.
“Let me check with the guys and see if there’s anything they need me for, then we can head out.”
“Thanks, Nem. I’ll be in Z’s office.”
Like her and Wilder, Blackjack and Atticus had just come out of the interrogation room when I returned. “Finished?” I asked.
“For today, but we ended up with a lot more information than I anticipated.”
“Well done, gentlemen. His cousin’s questioning has concluded as well.”
“Back to Shere, then?” Atticus asked.
“Actually, I was about to have lunch with Wren Whittaker.”
“I could eat,” said Blackjack. He looked down at his mobile. “Meet you back here in, say, ninety minutes?”
I breathed a sigh of relief that he wasn’t suggesting he and Atticus join Wren and me. “Sounds great.”
“Where to?”I asked when I found my friend sitting outside her father’s office.
“I could go for some curry.”
“The pub, then?”
“Hold on.” She held up a finger and rushed in the direction of the loo.
That was odd. Coupled with her equally strange behavior, I couldn’t help but wonder if Wren was preggers.
When she returned and her eyes met mine, I couldn’t stop myself from grinning.
“It’s early. We aren’t telling anyone yet,” she confessed. “We just confirmed it ourselves last night.”
“I will not utter a word.”
She put her arm through mine, and we walked to the elevator. “I wonder how Z will react.”
“React to what?” he asked, coming around the corner.
“Wilder and I have decided we’ve had enough of the UK. We’re moving to the States,” she said without missing a beat as the lift door opened.
He smiled. “Me as well,” he said just as the door closed behind us.
“Dammit. How does that man always get the last word?”
I raised a brow. It was a trait his daughter had definitely inherited.
