“Whether there is or not, nothing is going to happen between you and me. Not now. Not ever. Again, I’m sorry.”

“But—” She raised her hand to touch my face, but I grabbed her wrist.

“Don’t. You need to leave, Iris.”

I dropped her wrist and opened the door at the same time Cayman came out of the adjacent room.

“Iris?” he said, looking from her to me.

“She was just leaving.” I motioned him in my direction, pulled him inside, then closed the door, hoping she’d finally take the hint and go.

“What in the—”

“She just showed up here. Knocked on my fucking door. I was in the shower and thought it was room service.” I’d no more than said the words when there was another knock.

“Want me to answer?” Cayman asked.

“Might be better if you did.”

“May I bring your order in for you, Mr. Kappas?” asked the man delivering my food.

“I’ll take it, thanks,” said Cayman, wheeling the cart in and shutting the door in the guy’s face. “What do you mean she just showed up here?”

“How many meanings could that statement have? She…just…showed…up…here.” I enunciated every word.

“You’ve got a problem on your hands, Kappas.”

“No shit. How did she know what room I was in?”

“I think she has a sister or cousin or something who handles check-ins at the front desk. I may have also heard her brother works in security.”

Cayman looked at his cell. “We need to get downstairs.”

“Right.” I looked around for my shoes.

“Uh, you might want to consider putting on fresh attire. I’ll step out.”

“Right,” I repeated. “But wait for me. Don’t go down there yet.”

“Are you afraid Iris is lurking around the corner?”

“It wouldn’t surprise me if she was.”

I pulled a pair of pants and a collared shirt out of my bag, grabbed some socks, dressed, then stuck my feet in my shoes before I opened the door, relieved to see Cayman had waited like I’d asked.

“Do you want me to ask Puck?”

“About what?”

“Iris.”

“What would you say?”

“I don’t know. Ask if he’s shagged her lately?”

“Has he before?”

“Hasn’t everyone? Except me, of course.”
