My eyes opened wide.

Cayman cleared his throat. “I was just joking, mate. Good God, tell me you aren’t jealous.”

“Fuck, no. What I am is worried. This woman works at MI5.”

Cayman nodded while we waited for the elevator. “So, um, why does that worry you?”

“Jesus, never mind,” I muttered. “How are you a spy?”

My stomach rumbled, and I realized that, thanks to the Iris drama, I hadn’t touched the food I ordered. “I hope Doc and Merrigan arranged for something to eat.”

The doorto the suite we were meeting in was open when we approached, but we knocked before entering anyway.

“Ares, glad you’re here. I want to talk to you before we get started,” Doc said.

“Think he knows already?” Cayman whispered.

“Knows what?” he asked.

“Nothing. Really. It isn’t important. What did you want to talk to me about?”

He led me across the room and over to the window. “I realize we—no, I have usurped your role as CO of this investigation.”

“What are you talking about?”

Merrigan walked over to us. “What he’s trying to say is we handpicked you for the UN’s coalition because we wanted the best, Ares. And while we realize we should take a step back and let you lead it, it’s difficult because it’s become somewhat personal.”

I shook my head. “I get it, and I can assure you I have no problem with K19’s involvement. In fact, there’s no way I could have pulled this mission together without your help.”

Doc rubbed the top of his head. “I might remind you of that later when Razor and Gunner decide to throw their two cents in.”

When Merrigan said we should get started, my stomach rumbled again. “Sorry, I, uh, haven’t eaten.”

“Can I get you anything? Water? Coffee?” she asked.

“Got any bourbon?”

Doc laughed. “I think that can be arranged.”

“Goodness, you’re in a bad way. Let’s get you something to eat before you dive into the hard stuff,” said Merrigan, patting my shoulder when she walked over to the room’s phone.

“What about me?” Doc asked.

“I’m getting food for all of us, Kade. Good Lord, you’d think Laird was here.”

“Not my dad, my son,” he explained when I turned to him with scrunched eyes.

“I fear this will be a long afternoon and perhaps night,” she sighed while she waited for someone to answer her call.

“Nem,” I said under my breath.

“What about her?” Doc asked.

“We were going to meet. She, uh, we, I mean she was going to get me caught up on Operation Purfleet.”

Doc raised a brow. “Merrigan’s right. You’re in a bad way, boy.”

“You don’t know the half of it,” I mumbled.
