“That was quick,” I muttered.

“It had already been ordered,” said Merrigan, motioning to the men bringing in more platters. “No, sorry. Those go in the other suite.”

“Eat, Ares,” Doc said to me. “When you’re finished, we’ll get started.

“Should we wait?” I motioned to his wife.

“No, go ahead. She kind of reminds me of my mother when it comes to food—”

“I heard that,” Merrigan said from the doorway.

“What? You just like to make sure we’re all well-fed.”

She rolled her eyes. “And yet, not ten minutes ago, you feared I was only getting food for Ares.”

I put a sandwich on my plate along with fruit.

“Take another,” Merrigan said, brushing past me.

“See?” mumbled Doc. “Just like my ma.”

“I heard that too,” she said over her shoulder.

I followed her directive, grabbed another sandwich, then took a seat. I’d just finished what was on my plate when I heard a knock. “I’ll get it,” I offered since they were still eating.

“Check the peephole and make sure it isn’t Iris before you open the door,” Doc said from behind me.

“Very funny,” I muttered, but before I turned the handle, I checked.

NEMESIS

“What are you doing here?” Wren asked Z when he walked up just as she was about to knock on the door of the suite number Merrigan had given us.

“Hello, daughter. It’s good to see you,” he said, kissing her cheek. “And to answer your question, I was invited.”

“Oh.”

“While I may be getting long in the tooth, I am still chief of MI6, and we, along with several other agencies, are participating, by way of support with the raid of the container ship due to arrive in Felixstowe.”

“Right. Of course. Sorry,” she muttered.

Z looked at me and raised a brow before turning back to her. “Will you knock, or shall I?”

Wren knocked, and moments later, Ares opened the door.

“Hi,” he said, looking directly at me.

His hair was tousled as if he hadn’t run a comb through it in days, and his eyes were heated the same way mine were whenever I thought about our kiss.

He cleared his throat and took a step back. “Come in.”

I let Wren and Wilder go before me, just so I could stand close enough to breathe in his scent a few seconds longer.

“Ladies first,” said Z, breaking our trance.

“Hello, Ares,” I said, brushing by him close enough that my shoulder grazed his pecs.
