“Just me, or can I bring someone with me?”

When Nem’s eyes met mine, I wanted to tell her she didn’t need to ask. I’d be on that plane with her.

“I would suggest you don’t venture to that part of the world without backup, but I’ll confirm when I tell her you’re on your way.”

“Thanks, Z,” said Nem.

“I still have nothing to report on Mithras.”

“Ares does,” said Wren.

I pulled out my phone and sent the same photos to him. “I’ve just forwarded images to you. They were taken in Felixstowe, inside one of the containers. To be more specific, the container Luisa Reeve was in. The victims were questioned, but no one would confess to writing it.”

“Interesting,” Z mumbled. I assumed because he was looking through the photos. “Who has seen these?”

“Apart from the team who was there, just Nem, Wren, and you so far.”

“Circulate them within the coalition. Be sure to include Baissier Marchand.”

“Roger that.”

“I’ll take care of it,” said Nem when the call with Z ended. “I’m waiting to hear from him regarding the raid too.”

“What did I miss?” Wilder asked.

“Z was able to make contact with Oleander, and she’s agreed to meet but only in person. Apparently, she’s in Egypt. Nem is on standby to leave once she receives further instructions.”

“I’ll go with you,” I said.

“You cannot,” Wilder immediately responded.

I glanced over at Nem, who was looking at Wren. “Why can’t I?” I asked.

“It won’t work,” said Wren, barely making eye contact with me before looking back at Nem.

“Of course it will,” I argued. “I’m at a standstill with Felixstowe. There’s no reason I need to remain here.”

Wren raised her eyebrows.

“Oleander will not allow it,” said Nem.

“That’s ludicrous—”

“She’s right,” said Wilder. “I’ll go. We need to wait for confirmation, but if Oleander will permit it, I suggest we take Cayman and Puck with us.”

“Brits only? Is that it?” I said, chuckling. Their collective reaction told me what I’d said wasn’t a joke. “Who is this Oleander?”

Nem took a deep breath, then finally turned to me. “She is with a unit similar to K19’s Shadow Ops. Her role in intelligence is ultra-secretive, even within SIS.”

“I see.”

“It is not up to any of us to determine whether you can accompany me. Oleander would never allow it.”

Based on Nem’s tone alone, I accepted what she’d said. “Understood.”

“Thank you. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’ll make preparations to leave once we’ve heard from Z.”

“What else can I do?” I asked Wren after Nem left the room.
