“Precisely.”

“I’d say the two are well-suited, wouldn’t you?” Puck said under his breath, which, of course, I heard.

“This is bloody brilliant,”I said, reviewing the plans of action Ares had prepared.

The raid was divided into three main segments. The compound itself, along with the incoming and outgoing routes. Given its remote location, there was one main road going into Lesovo from the east and one from the west. As far as alternate routes, most were impassable for the type and size of vehicles being used. As with any raid on more than one location, timing was crucial. As was adequate support personnel.

Ares had also gotten far better overhead views from the NRO than Wren or I were able to obtain. While we still were unable to see victims, I had no doubt the activity we feared was taking place inside the warehouse was exactly as we’d thought.

The other thing they’d done in the time since we left Shere was to begin monitoring and logging activity on the perimeter of the area encompassing the warehouses.

Rather than send a reply email or even a message, I called Ares.

“Hey. How’d it go with Oleander?”

“Quite well, in fact. I sent a brief. Err, wait, maybe I didn’t. Hold on.” The bloody thing was stuck in my outbox. “There. It’s on the way.”

“I look forward to reviewing it.”

“Everything okay?” I asked.

“Yeah, yeah. My brain’s on overload, but I’m fine.”

“I can understand why. What you’ve prepared for Lesovo is brilliant.”

“I have to give at least half the credit to Kodiak. I just hope what happened in Felixstowe doesn’t happen here.”

Not that he could see them, but my eyes opened wide. “What happened?”

“Gunner Godet shot all our plans to shit.”

“Well, given this is my investigation and I highly approve of what you’ve prepared, we needn’t involve Gunner.”

Ares laughed. “Too late. I already sent them over and asked him to look for holes. The truth is, as hard as it was to hear at the time, he was right about the way the raid at the docks should go down. If we hadn’t done it his way, we might’ve lost victims.”

“It’s big of you to admit it,” I commented.

“I’m not one to put pride before the mission. I doubt you are either, Nem.”

“No, and I wouldn’t want to work with anyone who was. So, how are things in Shere?”

“Bloody boring, as you Brits say. I hope Cayman’s livin’ it up in Egypt, because there isn’t a damn thing to do here.”

“You could always cook dinner, dance a bit.”

“Nah, my dance partner’s too far away.”

“I’m sure Wren would be happy to let you twirl her around the kitchen.”

“I think she may be sleeping.” His voice lowered to a whisper. “Yep. She’s out.”

“Where are you?” I asked.

“Peeking intoyourbedroom.”

I laughed. “It’s probably better she sleeps in the main house tonight anyway since Wilder is away.”

“Nem?”
