I’d grown to recognize the lilt in his voice whenever he was about to say something I’d likely scold him for saying.

“Yes, War God?”

“Now, see? You just made me forget what I was about to say. Picturing you callin’ me that at the same time your nostrils flared…Man, it’s got me all hot and bothered.”

“So, shall I guess what you were about to say?”

“This should be good.”

“You miss me.”

“Look at you. You guessed on the first try.”

“Guess they’ll let me keep my job at SIS.”

“I have a feeling you’re in for bigger things than SIS.”

“What do you mean?”

Wilder stuck his head in the door. “Dinner’s here.”

“Oh. I’ve got to run. Dinner’s been delivered. We’ll be back tomorrow. That was the other thing I wanted to tell you.”

“That was quick.”

“Yes, well, it’s all in the brief I actually sent this time.”

“Good night, Nem.”

“Good night, Ares.”

ARES

After ending the call with Nem, I received word from Z, saying Ambassador Marchand would be at the SIS headquarters first thing in the morning. He also requested Wren and I meet with him there at zero eight hundred.

“Did you see the message from Z?” Wren asked, coming out of Nem’s bedroom.

“I did. Sorry it woke you.”

“I was awake. Wilder called.”

“I wish the meeting could be delayed until they return tomorrow,” I said.

“Nem wouldn’t want us to suggest it, given the urgency.”

“Understood.”

“Have you made Wilder aware that it’s taking place?” I asked.

“Not yet. What about you? Have you alerted Nem?”

“I have not.”

“I’ll take care of it,” Wren offered, and I was happy to let her, since Nem and I had just ended our call.

Something didn’t feel right to me about having a meeting regarding an op Nem “owned” without her there, especially on the scale of a raid. On the other hand, I understood the sense of urgency, as Wren had mentioned.
