My eyes met Wren’s, and in them, I saw the same amusement I was experiencing. Of course Godet went over my head to Baissier rather than give the feedback directly to me. On the other hand, if he’d have seen issues with the plans I crafted, there was no doubt I would’ve heard from him immediately.

“When do you envision mobilization?” Poseidon asked.

“With all due respect, I am not the mission leader for this raid. Nemesis Jordan is returning from Egypt this afternoon after confirming there is no reason to hold off in order to identify the origin of the second container.”

“She was successful?” Marchand asked.

“Yes, sir. It would be safe to say if we requested their support, Egypt would be happy to give it.”

Marchand nodded. “Well done.”

The compliment was directed at Nem, so while I nodded, I didn’t thank him.

“I am returning to France from here but will be available for videoconference when Nemesis is ready.”

“Yes, sir. I’ll make arrangements with her.” I turned to Poseidon.

“I’m sticking around,” he said, saving me the trouble of asking.

After Z adjourned the meeting,Wren, Poseidon, and I joined Mayhem and Hanadarko at Café Porto.

“Poseidon!” exclaimed Mayhem when we walked in. “This is a surprise.”

“It was to me too,” I told him.

“This feels like a reunion trip,” Mayhem said, standing to embrace our mutual friend.

“I wonder if he’ll feel that way seeing Nem this afternoon,” Wren whispered.

My eyes met Grace’s. She’d heard every word, not that she’d say anything now. Once we were alone, though, I had no doubt she’d grill me as to Wren’s meaning.

After we’d ordered and eaten, I invited Poseidon to stay in Shere tonight. When he took me up on it, I suggested he ride with Wren and I’d go with Mayhem and Grace.

We swung by Mayhem’s flat, which wasn’t far from the SIS headquarters, and while they grabbed their gear, I hung out with Millie.

“I told you she missed you,” said Grace when the sixty-pound dog made herself comfortable on my lap.

“Before we head out, Grace and I spoke a bit about what approach to take,” said Mayhem, sitting on the sofa, beside me.

“What did you come up with?”

“I want to start by taking a look at the list of victims who were rescued in Felixstowe,” said Grace.

“That can easily be arranged.” I stared out the window.

“Hey, what’s goin’ on with you?” Grace asked.

“Nothing.”

She cocked her head. “Does it have somethin’ to do with you needin’ to talk to Mayhem before Nem gets back?”

“What’s this?” Mayhem asked.

“Nothing,” I repeated, wishing Grace would let it go, but knowing by the look on her face, she wouldn’t.

We pulledup in front of the house in Shere and parked behind Wren.

“This is gorgeous,” Grace said when we got out of the car.
