“Did Mayhem say something about it?”

The smile left her face. “He said they had sex and that it wasn’t a big deal.”

I nodded but didn’t respond.

“Except it was a big deal to her, right?” She nudged me. “You don’t have to tell me. I know I’m right.”

“To be honest, I think Wren is blowing the whole thing out of proportion. If Nem were here now, I’m sure she’d not only agree, she’d also see him for the asshole he is.”

“Yeah, he can be. So, what’s the deal with her and you?”

“She makes me fucking crazy.”

Grace laughed out loud. It was a sound I hadn’t realized how much I missed. “I’m glad to hear it, Ares.”

“You have an odd way of looking at things, Hanadarko.”

“Not the first time someone’s said that to me.” When Millie lay on the grass, Grace slid off the bench and sat beside her. “Tell me about Felixstowe. And don’t give me some bullshit push back about reading the brief. I wanna hear it, not read it.”

I shook my head, not wanting to talk about it, but knowing for her to be able to do her job, I had to.

NEMESIS

The earliest flight we were able to get from Cairo to London didn’t leave until twelve hundred, which meant we didn’t get back to Shere until twenty-thirty.

“They there are,” shouted Wren when Wilder opened the door and the four of us walked in.

At the same time she raced over to Wilder, Ares stood and approached me. “Can I help you with that?” he asked, motioning to my bag.

“Sure. Thanks.” I looked beyond him to the group gathered in the largest of the sitting rooms.

“The whole crew was awaiting your return.”

I glanced to the far side of the space and at Mayhem, who raised his arm and waved, then tapped the arm of the woman beside him, and she waved too.

“Are you okay?” Ares asked.

I turned to him so my back was to those in the room. “Are you bloody serious right now?”

“Come with me.” He motioned to the bedroom, and I followed. He opened the door, wheeled my bag in, then shut it behind us. “To begin, I’m sorry. Second, I never like to throw anyone under the bus, but Wren seems to think you’re not.”

“Got it. I’ll set her straight at the earliest opportunity. However, I assure you I have no issue whatsoever with Mayhem being here.”

“I told Grace you wouldn’t. I also suggested that, once you saw him again, you’d recognize him for the asshole he is.”

I laughed. “This is how you talk about your friends?”

“Not usually, but you have to admit he is.”

“I’ll do no such thing. Ares—”

“Please don’t.” The tender look on his face nearly melted me.

“What I was going to say is I appreciate you handling the meeting with Marchand in my absence this morning, although after reviewing your brief, I wonder if I was even truly needed.”

Ares rested his hand on my waist. “You were missed, Nem. And I’m sorry I jumped directly to something personal.”
