“Three sets of victims. Some headed into a life of slave labor, some headed straight into the sex trade, some auctioned to the highest bidder,” she muttered under her breath. “Mother-goddamn-fuckers.”

“How do we determine who is who?” Mayhem asked. “Appearance seems…”

“Repulsive,” I said, finishing the sentence when he didn’t. “An aside, that O responded, at all, makes me think we’re getting closer to Marchand releasing information on Mithras.”

“Agreed,” said Ares. “However, it frustrates the hell out of me that he’s reluctant to divulge any lead.”

“I know I read it somewhere, but what’s his background?” Hanadarko asked.

“Limited intelligence. He was more of a government guy,” I responded.

“What she means is politician,” said Ares, nudging me with his shoulder.

“You wanna know what I think?” Hanadarko asked.

“Always,” said Ares.

“An agent should be heading up the whole coalition. Someone who understands what it’s like to be in the trenches. Not some guy who’s afraid of upsetting another country.”

I doubted that was Marchand’s agenda, but I kept my opinion to myself. Something told me his reason for withholding information was based on something else entirely.

“What are you thinking? Ares asked in a hushed voice.

“I’d like to believe his reasons relate less to politics and more to somehow endangering the lives of the victims.”

“Which is what made you want to hold off on the raid in Bulgaria until you could track the second container’s origin.”

“Precisely.”

“Now, see? It should be Nemesis.”

I looked up at Hanadarko. “What should be?”

“You should be in charge of this whole thing.”

I laughed, but no one else in the room did.

“I’m vastly underqualified,” I said. “But thank you.”

“No, you’re not,” said Ares, gazing at the room’s small section of blank wall.

“I wish I could read your thoughts,” I whispered.

He turned to me and smiled. “Right back at ya.”

“I overheard someone say you’re leaving for Bulgaria tomorrow. Yes?” asked Mayhem.

“That’s right,” I responded. “The advance team, which includes Ares and me. The rest will follow in a couple of days.”

“Godspeed, Nem.”

I looked over at him. “Much appreciated.”

He nodded once and looked over at Hanadarko. “Missing the mission aspect of the work we do?”

She shook her head. “What happened the last time taught me a lesson. I’m no longer trained for that kind of work.”

“What happened?” I asked.
