Spencer shrugged. “Baxter said he didn’t think that was necessary.”

“I know, but I think it is. And, since it’s our asses on the line if the base isn’t built on time, we’ll do what we think is necessary from this point on.”

Aidyn gripped his shoulder and shook him. “There you go. I think we need to take care of those little shits from the BRR too. We’re outsiders, so it isn’t like the sheriff or any of the townsfolk are going up there. It’ll be us. Outsiders. Maybe we can make them see the light.”

“It doesn’t appear they fear much, but I think you’re right. It’s time we take over some of this shit. These folks here fear another war. And those bastards up there know it.”

Adelaide chuckled. “Yep, they know it all right. They shot at an officer a couple of days ago and nothing happened.”

“That’s the truth, Addy.” Tate took a deep breath. “I’m going to get some shut-eye. I’ll head to the site early in the morning, around four, and relieve Maya and Henry. They didn’t have a full night’s sleep and I’ll take a bit of the load off them.”

Aidyn waved as he walked up the stairs. “I’ll go with you.”

Tate flopped on his bed and stared up at the ceiling. Even with all of this going through his mind, what he saw was the image of Lara holding that dress in front of her. He couldn’t wait to see her in it. And he was relieved that Spencer wasn’t mad at all. He seemed excited to go to the ball with Shianne, and that relieved him more than he cared to admit. Now, if they could just figure out how to teach those BRR bastards to stay up there where they belonged, life would be perfect.

Chapter14

Lara swallowed and let out a slow breath to calm the butterflies in her tummy as Sharon Jackson, her mom’s best friend, told her of the trouble in town last night.

“They robbed the gas station and beat up Flynn DeMario. He’s not in the hospital anymore. He went in for stitches and was released. Then, they went on over to Paxton’s and broke the windows and smashed the glass cases there. Mr. Paxton hid in the back, but not before he fell and broke his ankle running from them. That poor man hid in the freezer for an hour.”

“Oh, my God. I’m so sorry to hear all of this. It’s just getting worse and worse.”

“It certainly is, Lara. I sure hope your place doesn’t get hit again.”

She inhaled a deep breath and closed her eyes. “Me too, Sharon. Me too.”

“Anyway, I hear there are some new boys in town and from what I heard over at Homemade in the Hollow, they’re lookers.”

She laughed nervously. “They are lookers.”

“Oh, you’ve seen them?”

“I have.”

“Do you think they’ll come to the Bourbon Ball? It would bring in a lot more people if they were. Folks can’t wait to get a look at them.”

Lara’s cheeks grew warm, and she swallowed the lump in her throat. “I heard a couple of them were coming for sure.”

“Good! I can’t wait to see what all the fuss is about.”

Lara nodded, not wanting to say more. Luckily Sharon had chatted herself out and couldn’t wait to go on to the next stop and tell all she knew. She picked up her bakery bag, filled with blueberry muffins, and waved as she headed to the door. “Stay safe now, Lara. I’ll stop by and visit your mama in a little while.”

“Sounds good. I know she loves your visits.”

As the door closed behind Sharon, she let out a big huff of air and headed back to the kitchen to bring out fresh muffins that had been cooling on the table.

Sirens sounded, and she looked out the front window only to see the Jeep that had been here when those jerks wrecked her place. She felt her side and realized she’d once again not put her weapon on this morning and chastised herself for not being prepared. She needed to carry again until they caught those kids.

Her fingers shook, but she locked her door and pulled the string on the light until the sirens stopped and hopefully those BRR kids were headed back up the mountain.

Her knees shook; she pulled out a chair and watched out the window from her seat. Tugging her phone out of her back pocket, she dialed Shianne.

“Hey, I see they’re back down here again.”

“Yeah. I locked my door. But I’m shaking like a leaf, Shi.”

“I know you are, honey. I’ll stay on the phone with you. I’ve locked my door too.”
