Tate laughed. “I was thinking the same thing. I think it’s easier staying up than it is getting up.”

“So, I asked my dad and mom to pull up the treaty the BRR has with the town of Glen Hollow. I actually think it might be with the state of Kentucky, but I want to know that. Then, if it’s what I think it is, we can take action accordingly.”

“Such as?”

“I suspect the treaty is with the state of Kentucky. But I think it might be a federal treaty at its core, with the state signing as a third party.”

“You’re thinking Casper can offer some leverage?”

“I’m not sure. I’d think he would have given us that in the beginning if that was the case. But once I read the treaty, we’ll see if we can wrangle some options to keep those guys up on the mountain.”

Aidyn laughed and straightened his legs.

Tate turned into the site parking area and shut off his truck. Henry and Maya exited the trailer and waved as they descended the stairs.

“Any issues during the night?”

Maya shook her head. Her ponytail was slightly askew, but otherwise she still looked raring to go. “No. We heard the vehicles ripping up and down the hill last night. I don’t know if they were trying to intimidate us or what their deal was, but they didn’t come down all the way. At least not over here.”

“That’s good.” Tate said.

Henry brushed his hands down his face. “Yeah, I found how they’ve been getting in here, though. Maybe you can have the fence fixed at the rear of the property. They cut the fencing, then bent the wire and hooked it back, just like the hooks on the back of a woman’s dress. It won’t stop them from cutting it again, but Spencer can set up a camera back there and we can stop them before they get too far with it.”

Tate nodded. “Interesting analogy.”

Henry’s middle finger popped up.

Tate laughed. “Okay, great. And we’re all going to the Bourbon Ball in two weeks. So, we’ll need to get tuxes and Maya and Adelaide will need dresses. I understand there’s a boutique in town called Divine Designs. It’s owned by Shianne Brown and she’s been dressing all the women in town for the ball. You two should make a trip in there today or tomorrow.”

Maya’s nose wrinkled, and she shrugged. “I could wear a tux.”

“You can do that if you prefer. I’m not your clothing police. Just find something to wear and plan on attending the ball. It’s a good time for us to meet the townsfolk and get to know who’s who.”

Henry puffed his cheeks and let out a long breath, then he and Maya walked toward his truck to leave. Henry called over his shoulder, “Fresh coffee is in the pot. You can thank Maya.”

He chuckled. “Thanks, Maya.”

Tate followed Aidyn up the metal steps to the construction office and headed to the coffeepot for his first cup of coffee this morning. As he poured, his stomach tightened slightly. It didn’t smell like Lara’s coffee, and he already knew it wouldn’t taste like it either. That first sip reminded him he was right.

Aidyn chuckled, “It’s not Lara’s, is it?”

“That’s a fact.”

Pulling his laptop from its case, he set it up on the desk and pulled up the security cameras. His phone rang, and he saw his dad’s photo on the screen.

“Hey, Dad.”

“Hey, Tate. I just emailed you the treaty. Your thoughts are right on and this should help a lot with gaining leverage there.”

“Thanks, Dad. Hope you weren’t up all night.”

“No, your mom emailed Casper, and it was here when I woke this morning.”

Tate chuckled. “Tell Mom thank you. I’ll call her later and tell her myself.”

“How are you settling in?”

“Pretty good. We’ve had a few issues with the BRR, but we’re not sitting back and watching. We have access to the treaty now and we’ll use it against them.”
