Lara laughed and he couldn’t stop the grin on his face.

The door opened and Aidyn yelled. “Tate, we have to go. Trouble.”

He pulled away. “Sorry, Lara. Talk later, okay?”

He ran out the door before she could respond and jumped into his truck.

“What’s the issue?”

Aidyn slammed his door. “Spencer has been hurt at the base.”

“What?” He gunned his truck down the road. “What happened?”

“He was hit by the old Ford the BRR drives.”

“Is he hurt badly?”

“I don’t know. Addy just called and said we needed to get out there.”

Tate swallowed the lump in his throat. He was responsible for his team here and he was in the bakery when he should have been at the base where his team was. He’d forgotten his place here. Lara was a distraction to him. He couldn’t let that happen again. The last time he’d allowed himself to be distracted a teammate was injured and it took him years to get over the disgust in himself.

He roared through the gates and stopped in front of the office. An ambulance sat a few yards away near one of the smaller building’s footings. He took off at a run, Aidyn alongside him.

He saw Addy standing close and ran to her first.

“What happened?”

“Spencer saw the BRR on camera cutting the fence. He went out to stop them, I was a few steps behind. That Ford truck came out of nowhere and stepped on the gas. They aimed for Spencer. He managed to jump out of the way before they hit him. It seems his foot took the brunt of the damage.”

He moved toward Spencer. Medics had him lying on the stretcher and were loading him into the ambulance.

“Spencer? Talk to me. How bad is it?”

“Addy thinks it’s broken. Right now, the adrenaline is beginning to subside and it’s throbbing.”

“Did you see who was driving?”

“Yeah. The one with the long blonde hair. They lured us out here, I’m sure of it.”

“Where are the workers?”

“Not here yet.”

The EMTs pushed the gurney into the ambulance and Tate’s phone rang in his pocket.

The mayor’s number appeared on the display. “Fuck.”

Chapter20

Lara dabbed at her eyes and sucked in some deep breaths.

A customer walked into the bakery and she plastered on a smile.

“Hi, how can I help you?”

She was grateful for the business and the interruption of her dark thoughts. She hadn’t told anyone about her fear of being left out except Shianne. And, she knew it firsthand as that’s where Lara spent most of her time as a kid. She felt more included at Shianne’s house than her own. Shianne and her parents treated Lara as one of their own. They’d given her more love than her own parents had.

She went through the motions of the day. Baking and taking care of customers as they came in. She finally had a minute and called Shianne.
