“Sounds good. I’ll direct the containers to be placed while you’re at your meetings.”

“Thanks Baxter. I think we’ve got a good plan moving forward.”

Tate exited the construction trailer and walked across the grounds to where Aidyn stood lookout while the electrical crew laid new wiring down. Pulling up his phone he tapped Henry’s picture as he walked.

“Delany.”

“Henry. I need you and Maya back out here. Aidyn and I are going up the mountain in an hour and I’d like you and Maya close and ready in case we need assistance. Bring communication devices with you when you come out.”

“You got it.”

He looked into the basement where the men worked. Aidyn asked, “Have a plan?”

“Yep. We’re going to meet the mayor then we’re going back up the mountain to talk to Everett and tell him we’ll be taking prisoners.”

Aidyn laughed. “Now we’re talking.”

“As soon as Henry and Maya get here with our comm devices, we’ll go up. In the meantime, let’s go chat with the mayor.”

The drive to the mayor’s office was quiet. Tate’s gut tightened every time he thought about Spencer and his close call. He should have been here.

He swallowed a few times, unable to wet his throat. He pulled into the gas station on the corner. “I’m grabbing a water. Do you want something?”

“Nah.”

He trotted to the truck with his water in his hand, twisted the cap from his bottle and drank down a third of the cold liquid. He could feel it slide down his throat and he hesitated a moment to let the feeling wash over him.

Settling his water bottle in the drink holder he moved from his parking space and toward the mayor’s office.

Once in the parking lot, he glanced at Aidyn, who grinned. “Let’s go tell him how this is going to go.”

Tate nodded and opened his door. They walked in unison to the front door. Entering the building the receptionist asked, “Do you have an appointment?”

“We do. Tate Vickers and Aidyn Dunbar to see Mayor Rayleigh Winters.”

The receptionist giggled. “He prefers Ray. I’ll let him know you’re here.”

She picked up her phone and pushed a button. “Ray, Tate Vickers and Aidyn Dunbar are here to see you.”

She hung up and pointed to a door at the end of the hall. “You can go in, he’s ready.”

Tate nodded and hurried to the mayor’s office. He knocked twice before opening the door. Mayor Rayleigh Winters was a man of moderate height. Tate and Aidyn both bent their heads down to look him in the eye. He had a quick smile on his face, wore glasses, and had a spare tire around his middle.

“Nice to meet you, Tate.” He vigorously shook Tate’s hand then Aidyn’s. “Aidyn, nice to meet you.”

He pointed to two green upholstered chairs in front of his desk. “Take a seat and call me Ray.”

After sitting, Ray walked around his desk and sat in his chair. “Tell me what’s on your mind.”

Tate leaned back and crossed his left ankle over his right knee.

“I assume you’ve been apprised of the situation today with the BRR and my teammate Spencer Lawson.”

“Yes. How is Spencer?”

“He’s fine. Sore. Pissed.”

Ray nodded his head and folded his hands together. “It’s my mission while I’m mayor to extract the BRR from Hickory Hill, or more properly, Sugar Maple Mountain.”
