“Yep.”

Three four wheelers pulled out of the brush and blocked the road. He put his truck in park and exited. He strode toward the three men, two of them the same as last time.

The one in the center he recognized as the man who drove the Jeep and shot at his truck. That man’s eyes glanced at the top of Tate’s truck and a slight grin spread across his face. It reminded Tate of the Grinch. Slow. Creepy. Evil.

He had dark hair and blue eyes. He looked like someone Tate knew. It was likely his face was permanently imprinted in his mind because the fucker shot up his truck.

“And to what do we owe the pleasure today?” One of the men said.

“We’re here to see Everett.”

“Again? What makes you think he’s interested?”

“I’ve got some updates. He’s interested.”

The three chuckled and kicked at the ground a bit. From his peripheral vision, Tate saw Aidyn look at him then stand taller, his chest puffed out and his hands were ready to draw if need be.

The man standing to the right of the three glanced at the younger man in the middle and tossed his head toward the mountain. “Kent, go ‘announce’ our visitors and see if President Howard will accept them.”

The younger man spat on the ground between them, a glare in his eyes. Tate had a weird déjà vu moment and rotated his shoulders.

Kent scowled once more, then hopped on one of the four wheelers, started it and moved as fast as it could up the road, disappearing around a corner.

His eyes then landed on the older of the two standing before him. “As I mentioned, my name is Tate Vickers. This here is my teammate, Aidyn Dunbar.”

“And?”

“What are your names?”

“What’s it to you?”

Aidyn’s anger boiled to the surface. Tate could feel the anger rolling off him. When he spat out his words, it was clear just how close to boiling he was. “What’s wrong with being friendly?”

The older man chuckled, then shrugged. “My name’s Brenner. His is Ramsey.”

Tate nodded. “It’s nice to meet you.”

His phone buzzed, and he pulled it from his pocket and tapped the icon to answer. It wasn’t lost on him that both Brenner and Ramsey flinched.

“Vickers.”

Spencer’s voice said, “Keaton Bennit wants to know if you’re up in Hickory Hills trying to meet with Everett Howard.”

“Yes, I am.”

“Okay. What do you want me to tell him as to a reason?”

“Not a thing. We’ll be taking care of things from this point forward.”

“Okay.” Spencer chuckled. “I love how big your balls are, Tate.”

Tate chuckled. “We’ll see how big they are when I get back.”

Spencer chuckled. “I’ll let him know.”

Tate ended the call and tucked his phone into his front pocket once again. Ramsey and Brenner stood in their spots, but they fidgeted and kicked at the ground a bit, and he wished he were in their heads. He wasn’t sure if they were unpredictable or when confronted, were like most bullies, and shrank back because they weren’t expecting confrontation. He’d bet the latter, but he wouldn’t stake his life on it.

The sound of the four-wheeler barreling down the hill grew louder and his heart beat faster as it neared.
