“Hey. Anything going on?”

“Some cameras stopped working, so I walked out to check them.”

“It appears we need to investigate. I’m thinking we need to go up the mountain on foot and in secret.”

“What’s up?”

Tate motioned to the trailer. He and Aidyn stepped inside and he told him of the electronic issues going on in town.

Aidyn sat back in his chair, his forefinger brushing back and forth across his chin.

“I think those fuckers have a scrambler.”

“I didn’t think they had electronics up there.”

Aidyn sat forward and rested his elbows on his knees. “Tate. They have phones or some communication.”

“Yeah.” Tate scrubbed his hands through his hair, then down his face. “Fuck, I’m tired.”

“Go home. Take a nap. Maya and Henry will be out here soon and I’ll be home in an hour. Then we’ll chat about what we need to do. Plus, by that time, Spencer might have some ideas of what’s happening up there.”

“I won’t leave you out here alone.”

“Bro, you just did. We’re fine.” Aidyn stood. “It just may be that those assholes have been testing their equipment and now they know it’s working. So tonight we’ll all need to be on duty.”

Tate nodded. “It’ll be dark at eight. Maya and Henry will be here. Someone should walk the perimeter, and you and I will walk up the mountain to see if we can find out what’s happening.”

“That sounds like a solid plan.”

Tate nodded. “Alright. I have to pick Lara up at four. I’ll set my alarm and we’ll make our plan once I get to the house.”

“Does she cook?”

Tate shook his head. “She does, but that’s not why I’m bringing her Aid.”

“I know, but I’m hungry. We’ve mostly eaten microwaved crap since we got here.”

“I’ll tell you what. I’ll order from the diner and bring it with me when Lara and I get back to the house. We’ll eat something good tonight. We can hire someone to come in four times a week to cook for us. How about that?”

“That sounds great. We aren’t used to cooking on our own. We’ve always had Mrs. James and Kylie.”

Tate nodded and stood. “You’re right. I’ll get on it. See you in a couple of hours.”

As he drove back to the house, he drove past the streets where the accident happened and noted Keaton was just finishing his investigation. He kept driving toward the bakery to make sure Kent and company weren’t stalking Lara.

A block from the bakery, his truck shut off. He slammed on the brakes and grabbed the steering wheel with both hands. Guiding his truck to the edge of the road safely, he took in deep breaths and looked around for anyone lurking about.

He noticed in his mirror the Ford truck he’d seen the first day turn up the road to the BRR compound.

He tried to roll down the window, but the electronics were off, so he opened his door and listened as the engine noise from the truck faded. When he couldn’t hear the truck any longer, he turned the key on his truck and it started up.

Grabbing his phone from the holder on the dashboard, he dialed up Spencer.

“Yeah.”

“They’re scrambling electronics. My truck was just shut down, then I saw the old Ford truck zip up the mountain. As soon as he was out of sight, my truck started again.”

“Son of a bitch.”
