“I’ll be home as soon as I can. You don’t have to wait up for me. I’ll be quiet when I climb into bed.”

Her eyes stared into his, and his heartbeat increased. She really was a beautiful woman.

“Sounds good. Thank you for taking the time to help me get some things from my house.”

“Of course. I’m sorry we didn’t get the chance to set up the generator at the bakery today, but I promise we’ll work on it tomorrow.”

“Maybe you’ll figure out what’s going on and we won’t have to worry about a generator tomorrow.”

He smiled. “I like the way you think.”

She giggled. He kissed the tip of her nose, then stood. “I’ll see you later.”

She stood and walked with him to the dining room where Aidyn waited for him.

“Ready?”

Aidyn nodded.

Adelaide and Spencer sat at the table with their computers open and she tapped at her ear. “Comm units on.”

Tate chuckled. “Yes, boss.”

Adelaide shrugged her right shoulder and kept working on her laptop.

He looked at Lara once more, soaking her up before he left on this mission. He was already eager to come home and hold her in his arms tonight.

He turned to walk out the door and the lights flickered. The generator shut off. Turning to Lara, he said, “Will you give Shianne a call and see if her lights came back on? Text me please.”

“Sure.” She smiled, and he soaked that up too.

As he and Aidyn ambled to the vehicles, he said, “Let’s take the old Impala Spencer found for us.”

“Sounds good.”

As they drove through town, they noticed lights popping on in the businesses.

“This explains why they drive older vehicles. At least one reason.”

“They don’t have money either.”

“True. And that’s likely one reason it pissed them off and they’re fucking with the businesses in town. It’s got to be more than just the trading, or lack of trading. There are still those trading on the side.”

He drove into the lot on the construction site and parked next to Henry’s truck. They entered the construction office and Henry and Maya sat on their computers, looking at the security cameras around the perimeter.

“What’s going on?”

Henry turned and stretched in his seat.

“They came down the mountain on 4-wheelers, and were quiet, which alerted us they were sneaking around. They walked around the fence in the back, approximately two hundred feet. Then turned around and left. I was just about to go out and see if they planted something.”

Aidyn shook his head. “Tate and I can walk back there on our way up the mountain.”

Maya turned and stood. She pointed to her computer screen.

“They started in this area here. It was Ramsey and Brenner.” She started the security video and he and Aidyn leaned in to watch it.

Tate nodded. “Okay. We have our comm units on. They just turned the electricity back on around the same time as this video. I wonder if they did that, so it kept folks busy and not paying attention to what they were doing?”
