The woman chuckled. “I’m afraid you’ve been caught up in the dirty deeds of your father. Everett believes if you’re his wife, your father will have no choice but to honor his word and help us.”

“But I have nothing to do with that.”

“That’s right. And unfortunate.” She dabbed the rest of the poultice around her mouth.

The door opened again, and Kent walked into the cabin. He stared at her for a long time, but she remained steady. She stared at him in return and refused to look scared. Inside though, she’d never been more scared in her life.

Kent played with something in his hand, and she saw it was her phone. He twirled it around in his hands as he grinned.

“So, Lara, the owner of the bakery. Lara Bennit.” He practically spat her last name.

“And you’re Kent. Kent of the hooligans who damaged my bakery.”

“Your smart mouth is going to learn the rules here very soon.”

She stared into his eyes, and he shrugged then rubbed his temples. He looked just like her dad when he did that. That almost stopped her breathing. She stared at him intently and noticed things about him. His eyes were the same blue. His hairline had that same peak at the temples as her father. Then he chuckled and she knew.

She swallowed and Kent tapped on her phone. He tapped her phone again and she could hear it ringing on the other end.

“Your father is going to want to know where you are. You tell him he needs to come and get you before six tonight or he’ll find you a married woman.”

The phone rang again and finally her father answered. “Lara, honey, I don’t have time right now I have to...”

“Dad. I’ve been kidnapped. The BRR have me. I’m here with Kent right now.”

Kent laughed. “Hello, Keaton. Or should I say Dad?”

Her father sputtered on the other end of the phone. Finally, he said, “Kent. Don’t do this.”

“We’ve told you over and over you need to honor your word. To date you’ve failed to distribute our elixir to other towns. You’ve failed to get the council to reinstate the deferment.”

“Lara has nothing to do with this.”

“She’ll be paying the price for you. At six o’clock tonight, if you haven’t come up here and gotten your first batch of elixir for distribution, Lara will be getting married to Everett.”

“No. Please don’t do that to her. She has nothing to do with this.”

“Look. Dad. You made promises. You’ve not kept any of them.”

“Lara, honey, I’ll do anything to help you...Everything to help you. I promise.”

“Warn Tate. They’ve threatened him.”

Kent tapped the end call icon and the call disconnected.

Chapter44

“Lara!” He called out the door. Looking across the yard near the garage, he saw something silver laying on the ground near the garbage cans. His stomach rolled as he neared it and saw her Instant Pot. It looked as though it had been kicked over or dropped. Lifting the lid to the can, he looked inside and saw the juice from the brisket. His gut seized.

His dad approached. “Anything?”

“No.” He pointed to the Instant Pot. “She came out here to dump the grease.” His voice caught. “They took her, Dad.”

“Call Keaton. I’ll call your teammates.”

Tate called Keaton Bennit. It rang more than a few times and his anger boiled.

“Tate. They...”
