The receptionist smiled at her, “Hi there, Kenna. Attorney Smith has the paperwork right here for you.”

Jessie had been a freshman when Kenna was a senior in high school. She didn’t look like she’d aged much at all. Still slightly plump, with a cute dimple on her right cheek.

“Thank you, Jessie. How are you doing?”

“I’m good. I’ve got two babies now and trying to lose all that weight. You look fantastic. How are you?”

“I’m good. Trying to catch up with all the comings and goings around here.”

“I understand that. Did you know Colt is engaged to Ami Pearson?”

Ah, so she was trying to see her reaction. Likely still friends with Ami. “I heard that. If I recall correctly, she always had a crush on him. Good for them.”

She smiled brightly and noticed the twitch Jessie’s lips made. Kenna bit the inside of her cheek to keep from smiling. Pegged her!

“Yes, I think the wedding will be this summer. Will you be around for it?”

Ah, this was typical. Gossip. The second she was out the door, Jessie would call Ami. “I’m not really sure if I’ll still be here, and to be honest, I’ll bet neither of them would be comfortable with me around. So, I’ll hang back and let them have their big day. Every bride and groom should have that, don’t you think?”

“Oh, sure. I mean, yes, of course.”

Kenna picked up the folder with her paperwork inside and smiled brightly. “You have a great day, Jessie. I’ve got to get these papers served.”

She turned quickly and strode out the door, her back straight, her ponytail swishing and her pride intact. Nice.

Outside, she looked up the mountain and sent up a silent prayer that Craig was in a better mood today.

She hopped in her Jeep, with both sets of paperwork to serve on Craig, and headed toward the mountain road closest to her office. Perhaps there would be different BRR members guarding this road and she’d be able to get past them.

Spencer trudged along the newly laid footings at the construction site, calculating how the walls would change their visibility and how he’d need to change his cameras. He twisted his head to see the camera pointing at this spot, then turned toward the camera on the far left of the site, pointing this direction. He needed two more cameras.

Baxter Fenshaw sidled up behind him. “Well, what do you think?”

“Two more cameras. When will the walls be up?”

“Tomorrow. Thursday at the latest.”

“Okay. I’ll bring the cameras with me tomorrow. No need to install them until I can see the walls and where to position them.”

Spencer moved toward the north side of the footings. “There’ll be one door here?” He pointed to the other break in the footings. “One there.” Then pointed to the back of the building. “And one there?”

“Yes. This building is the armory, so we’ll need cameras inside, too.”

“Okay. I’ll work with the security company to ensure we’re all together with our equipment.”

Baxter rubbed his chin with his left hand. “Did you find out anything about the kid from yesterday?”

Spencer shook his head and mentally told himself not to slouch. He felt sheepish about that incident. “No. Haven’t seen hide nor hair of him. I’ve checked all the camera footage, and he seemed to appear out of nowhere.”

“I’m guessing it was a prank. Summer football training is starting at the high school and my gut tells me it was a freshman initiation prank.”

“They do that here?”

Baxter laughed a hearty belly laugh. “Oh, they do that. Every freshman, every year, has to do something considered dangerous or daring.”

Spencer turned to face Baxter head on. “What did you have to do your freshman year?”
