Page 15 of Rescuing Kenna

Baxter shook his head slowly. “I’m not proud, know that. I had to hot-wire a used car from the dealership in town. It’s no longer here, but I hot-wired a Cougar and drove it to the back of the old sewing factory where you live. Cops were all over town looking for that damned car.”

Spencer’s mouth hung open for a minute, before he realized his action and snapped it closed. “You’re shitting me?”

“I am not.” Baxter shook his head again. His beefy shoulders shaking as he laughed.

“Did you get caught?”

“Nope.”

“No shit?”

Footsteps approached. “No shit what?”

He glanced at Henry, who stopped near them, his brows pinched together and lifted.

Baxter sighed. “I hot-wired a car when I was young and dumb.”

Henry stared, his mouth hanging open. When he finally closed his mouth, he shook his head. “If someone had bet me a hundred dollars that you were a rebel when you were younger, I would have taken that bet. You’re the straightest arrow I know.”

Baxter laughed. “We’ll leave it at that.”

He turned and sauntered back toward the construction crew as they began to clean up for the day. Spencer turned to Henry. “What’s up?”

“Tate called. Casper wants a meeting. Tonight at five-thirty.”

“Okay. I’ll head right out of here after the construction crew leaves and the cameras are in place.”

“Sounds good. I’m heading out now. I’m on grocery pick-up duty.”

Spencer chuckled and slapped Henry on the back. “You’re always on grocery pick-up duty.”

“Don’t I know it. Helissa thinks I’m only good for picking up heavy things.”

Spencer laughed as his friend’s feet scraped the ground as he trudged toward his truck. He glanced up to see Colt Lowe staring at him. The fine hairs on the back of his neck prickled as he held Colt’s gaze. There was something akin to evil in that man’s face, but he couldn’t quite put his finger on it. He’d steer clear of him, but he’d be damned if he’d back down from Colt. He lifted a hand to wave and pasted a smile on his face.

Finally, Colt looked away and walked toward the parking area.

The sun glinting off a vehicle up the BRR road caught his eye.

Kenna’s Jeep cleared the trees and brush, and he swore as he jogged toward the front of the lot. She was driving too fast and sped into the lot, slamming on her brakes just before hitting the construction trailer.

Colt beat him to her Jeep and flung open her door.

He heard her scream, “Get the fuck away from me! You hear me? Get away.”

“I’m not doing shit to you, you crazy bitch.”

Spencer ran full speed to Kenna’s Jeep. When he got there, he yelled, “What the hell is going on?”

Colt turned and pierced him with the scariest glare he’d ever seen. Spencer shook his head and pushed past him to Kenna. That’s when his stomach roiled and his heartbeat raced faster than a Ferrari on the Autobahn.

“Kenna, what the hell...”

She looked into his eyes, tears spilling from hers. His eyes widened at her beautiful, bruised, cut, and dirty face. Without thinking, he reached in, sliding his left arm under her legs and his right arm behind her waist, and pulled her from her Jeep. He carried her into the construction trailer as she wept in his arms.

Colt followed behind him, and he whirled around, Kenna still in his arms. “Get out of here. Now.”

“I want to see her injuries.”
