Page 24 of Rescuing Kenna

He chuckled lightly. “Frustration. I don’t understand your parents not protecting you. I don’t understand why Colt would ever hit you. Hitting a woman is never acceptable. Well, unless she’s attacking me. In my business, there are always exceptions. But never someone you care about. Never someone...” His voice grew quiet. “Like you.”

He stood and picked up the cold teacup on her bedside table. “I’ll bring you fresh tea when you wake. Sleep tight, Kenna.”

“Night,” she whispered.

He ambled to the kitchen, discarded the wrappers and swabs and rinsed Kenna’s teacup. He pulled two bottles of water from the refrigerator and set them on the counter while he warmed fresh water for Kenna’s tea.

He poured two more ibuprofen tablets from the bottle in the bathroom and found a plate in the kitchen. He laid a napkin on the plate, topped it with the ibuprofen, then set the hot cup of water on the plate. Dropping a tea bag into the cup, he picked it up, along with one bottle of water, and carried it to Kenna’s bedroom.

Her deep, steady breathing made him smile. She needed the rest to heal. He left the plate next to her bed in case she woke and the bottle of water next to it should she prefer water. Exiting the bedroom, he stretched as he walked to the sofa and once again heard Colt nearing the building from the county road. He pulled his phone up and opened the video recorder and videoed Colt driving past. “It’s now twelve forty-two a.m.” he said while the camera was rolling.

Emailing the video to his teammates, he settled onto the sofa, hoping to get a few minutes of sleep. A couple of hours would be better, maybe even four of them. But time would tell.

His phone vibrated, and he pulled it off the coffee table to see a text from Addy.

“He’s been driving close to the base as well.”

Addy followed it with a clip from the video surveillance he’d set up. Colt pulled into the lot, looked at Kenna’s Jeep, then sped from the lot.

“He’s beat her in the past. Old boyfriend. Clearly still has issues. He’s driven past here over eight times already tonight.”

Henry replied.

“He’s a powder keg. Watch your back.”

Spencer took a deep breath and wondered just how Colt would behave in the morning on site. It would be interesting for certain. But he had nothing to be ashamed of. While he’d love to kiss Kenna, he’d kept himself the perfect gentleman. She needed help, and he was there to assist. He knew she hadn’t called her parents, and he knew she wouldn’t, so he was happy to be here helping her out. Otherwise, who knows what that asshole Colt would do if she were here alone?

He glanced around the room, the moonlight offering enough light that he could see some vantage points. Tomorrow he’d wire Kenna’s place with cameras should Colt decide to be a jerk and do something here. They’d be able to get to Kenna without her having to call in the police.

He heard Kenna moving around again in the bedroom and got up to see if she was alright. He tapped his knuckle on the door and she said, “Come in.”

“Are you alright?”

“I’m freezing again.”

Spencer silently walked to the opposite side of her bed, laid his phone on the bedside table, and slid under the covers and behind her. He wrapped his arms around her body and pulled her back to his front to warm her. He fell asleep almost instantly.

Kenna woke. Popping her arms out from under the covers, she remembered Spencer had slid into bed to warm her up last night. She didn’t protest, because it was such a sweet thing to do. But also because she liked it. With Colt driving by, she felt vulnerable again. With Spencer here with her, she felt safe. He made her feel safe.

But now? Now she was hot. And her head hurt. At least her head above her right eye hurt. It throbbed, and she wondered how long before it stopped doing that. She looked at the bedside table and saw the plate he left there with her now cold cup of tea, a bottle of water and two ibuprofen tablets. She smiled and felt the pull on her bottom lip, but she smiled just the same.

Spencer moved behind her and she turned her head to see him sitting up, with his feet flung over to the floor and scraping his hands through his hair. He had magnificent hair. It was dark, like hers, but short. It shone where the sun highlighted it. Short on the sides and back, but longer on top, the style fit him.

He glanced back at her. “Morning.”

“Morning.”

He stood and moved to her side of the bed. “Did you sleep well?”

“I did, finally. I don’t know why the shivers keep washing over me.”

“Adrenaline dump. You were crashing. The adrenaline dumped into your system to get you through the trauma, and once it leaves, your body is depleted, and the chills start."

“Thank you for keeping me warm.”

His cheeks blushed pink. With his dark hair and green eyes, that hint of pink complemented his coloring perfectly.
