“You’re welcome. I think I fell asleep fast. Sorry. Your bed is more comfortable than sleeping on the sofa.”

Her lips straightened and turned down. “I’m sorry. That isn’t a very comfortable sofa.”

She pushed the covers back more and turned on her side, then lifted her upper body off the mattress with both hands. She felt the pain in her ribs, but it didn’t feel as bad as it did yesterday.

“Do you need help?” Spencer looked concerned and unsure of what he should be doing.

She smiled, despite the pull on her bottom lip. It didn’t feel as swollen as it was yesterday. “I can manage. Thank you.”

Scooting to the edge of the bed, she stood and felt rather proud of herself for managing it.

She looked up at him. “I need to use the bathroom unless you need to go first.”

He shook his head. “No, I can wait. Go ahead.”

Closing and locking the bathroom door, she used the toilet and examined her knees. They had bruises on them, as well as her left thigh, but it could have been worse. Her knees were still sore from falling on them, but better than yesterday.

Washing her hands, she looked in the mirror; her eyes were clearer than yesterday too.

She pulled her hairbrush from the top drawer of her vanity and brushed her hair. Feeling as presentable as she could, she left the bathroom so Spencer could use it.

She found him in the kitchen. He stared at the coffee maker a moment, then pushed the on button and nodded. She giggled.

He whirled around and his eyes landed on hers. “I’m sorry. It was cute watching you try to figure out the coffeepot.”

His brows rose into the lock of hair that fell onto his forehead. “Cute?”

She shrugged. “Yeah. There’s nothing wrong with that.”

She stood, watching the emotions play over his face and not for the first time she thought he was incredibly handsome. He was taller than she’d realized before, though she’d always had heels on before. Now, as she stood across the room from him, she could see how tall he was. Broad shoulders stretched his t-shirt and the muscles in his arms moved and bunched as he reached for coffee cups in the cupboard.

She swallowed as he turned, and she licked her lips to moisten them. Her tongue stopped at the cut on her bottom lip and she quickly sucked it inside her mouth as she noticed his gaze on it.

“Sit down, I’ll bring your coffee. How do you like it?”

“Creamer please.”

He nodded; she shuffled to the chair closest to her and lowered herself into it.

She opened her phone to read the emails she’d received and realized she had work to do. Though she wouldn’t be serving any papers today. But she could sit at the computer and pull together her affidavits. Maybe she could find someone to go out to her parents’ house and pick up her father’s notebook.

Spencer set her coffee cup in front of her and sat across the table from her.

“Do you have to work today?” she inquired.

“Yes. Though I don’t punch a clock. My duties at the base have slowed right now until the construction crew gets the walls up on the next building.”

“Oh. What do you do then?”

“I’ll work with the security company to install cameras and alarms. I take care of the outside for our purposes. They take care of the main security for the US military, but we’re working together on it because we can share wiring and harnesses and pathways.”

He took a sip of his coffee, and her eyes landed on his fingers. He had strong fingers, and she remembered him brushing her hair from her forehead last night. A thrill ran through her body at the memory. Then again, when he’d wrapped his arms around her to keep her warm. As she looked at his powerful arms now, she wondered how he could also be so gentle.

“Kenna?”

Her eyes snapped to his. He’d asked her a question. “I’m sorry.” Her cheeks felt warm, and she tucked her hair behind her ear.

“Why did you go up the mountain alone yesterday?” he questioned.
